Failed inspection - 2002 SC430!
Hello-
I am a new member and contemplating purchase of a well used SC 430. It has 120k miles on it, and received 5k interval services, according to the Carfax, for most of its life up to 110K miles. However,
Here is the major problem. In order to register the vehicle it needs to pass an emissions inspection. After running the car for 250 miles with Shell 93 and 2 bottles of Techron, here are the failures:
1.Fail: MIL Engine Off (The check engine light on the dash is burned out.)
2.Fail: DTC !: P0135: 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1 (failure)
Regarding 1., I am told by my technician who we trust that the entire dashboard has to be removed and the instrument cluster has to be replaced. One can't just buy a bulb. Is this correct?
Regarding 2. The same person told me that the system needs a flow test as the catalytic converters maybe clogged. Otherwise, replacing the 02 sensor maybe the fix. Is this correct?
Although warranted, I do not think the vendor will do the work or pay for the work to make it pass if it involves removing the dash, etc.
Thank you for your wise advice.

PS
I have not purchased this car yet as the sale is contingent on passing emissions.

Go to Lexus driver link below and sign up then run the vin and you can pull the entire service history that was done at any Lexus Dealership.
https://secure.drivers.lexus.com/lexusdrivers/home
I would not count on Carfax to have the entire Service History. Lexus Driver will have the history from day 1 as long as it was done at a dealership. You can add and delete all the cars that you think you might be interested in before you invest to much time in any given SC.

Thank you for the valuable supplementary information.

After running the report it seems:
- Run flat tires often go flat
- The car spent as much time in the Lexus dealer body shop as doing maintenance!
- It presently needs a dreaded Takata airbag replacement.
- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ~|~CUSTOMER STATES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON 110.00 PLUS TAX ~|~FOUND FAULT P0155 ~|~TECH REPLACED BANK 2 SENSOR 1 AF S ENSORat 82k miles

Regarding the Lexus Driver’s website history. The history there will be authorized Lexus dealers. Independent shops and DIY is not included UNLESS the owner of the car entered it manually.
regarding the speedometer light. No the whole dash does not come out. Just the speedometer. There are threads here with the procedure for removal it’s not difficult. A competent tech can replace the LED for the chk eng light. You don’t have to replace the speedometer IF it’s just the lamp. But that’s a big IF.
O2 sensors fail all the time without affecting the cats. See this thread post #38 for the location https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc4...-lights-3.html

As said above on the bulb for the cel. The heater circuit for that O2 sensor just need the new O2. The catalytic converters are fine or the rear O2 would be throwing a code for insufficient catalyst.
So pull the cluster and get the bulb replaced, and get the new upstream O2.

Is there also a bulb(s) to illuminate the 3 clusters? The two sides seem brighter than the center.... If I am in there for the CHECK ENGINE bulb I should have those others replaced? Any good sources or part numbers for the bulbs, or a way to search for them?

Genuine Lexus 18" wheels?
While we are on the subject, do these look like real SC 430 wheels?
I have not taken them off yet so I do not know where or what the offset (WOS) is. Is the WOS stamped on the inside like say a Mercedes wheel?

Regarding the run flats going flat, more than likely the problem is the TPS leaking. When you replace the tires, you need to make sure that the tire place replaces the o-rings in the sensor also. (Or you can just take it to a tire place and have them replace all the seals in the TPS now.) However, it is also possible that the problem is the rims not providing a good seal. If that is the case, it depends on what the problem is with the rims. Sometimes a wheel repair company can repair that if it isn't too bad. Good luck and happy hunting. (Note, there are plenty of other SC430s out there if you want to just move on.)

Agree with Harold, I would move on and hunt for another SC, preferably an 06+. Be patient, you wii come across a better deal.
