Ever since I bought this car, I’ve been looking for a way to preserve the ML sound system while adding Bluetooth/Aux. After multiple tries, I think I found what works for me. My previous attempt using the poorman’s aux is working fine however, it just doesn’t provide the ML sound quality. So I kept on researching/reading/tinkering until now. My new solution provides HQ Bluetooth streaming as well as the ability to make phone call utilizing the car speaker, albeit it costs a little more than my other attempts. This is no way a perfect setup but it certainly provides what I want.
Here are what you’ll need if you want the same setup I have. BT45-TOY $140
I’m assuming you already know how to take the radio apart for this installation, if not please use the search function.
1. Unplug the 5-7 pin harness from the back of the radio (there are only 2 wires on this one), then plug it into 1 side of the 5+7 Y-adapter 2. Connect the other side to the BT-TOY cable 3. Plug the Y-adapter to the car radio 4. Set the dip switch on the BT45-TOY to all ON. You can play around with diff setup for the dipswitch as well. Pick the one works best for you. If you have #4 off, the radio will look like it’s off. You can’t adjust anything except Vol+/- and the Mode button on steering wheel will mute/unmute the sound. 5. The radio will display AUX. 6. You can adjust Bass/mid/treble/bal/fad/ASL normally 7. Plug in the mic (I’m still figuring out where’s the best place to put the mic) 8. Use your phone, add the new Bluetooth device, BT45-TOY (if you have Android, add it to Trusted Devices under Smart Lock so your phone remains unlocked while it’s connected to this device) 9. You can play music and enjoy the HQ sound as if it was playing CDs 10. Phone call will route to the ML sound system, loud and clear. 11. If you switch to any other input ie. AM/FM/CD and need to back to Bluetooth, make a phone call (example, dial 611, then hang up) If you figure out another way, please share. 12. If you are listening to Bluetooth source (AUX), when turning off the car, music pauses, start/turn on the car, music resumes.
Since it’s not full supported by USASPEC, here are a few cons:
1. Can’t use Seek Up/Down to answer phone, skip track 2. Can’t use the DISC button to switch to AUX 3. Mode button to cycle through AM/FM1/FM2/CD only 4. No physical button to switch back to the BT45-TOY
If you have any question, I'll try to answer them as best as I can.
I was surprised that it would work as well since there is no support or mention of the SC430 for this product on USASPEC anywhere. I guess it's not 100% perfect so that's why.
I don't have or use XM/Sirius. I use google/youtube Music and since this setup has a microphone I can pretty much use Google Assistant for complete hand-free experience. I can just "hey google call xzy, hey google play music, hey google stop, hey google navigate home...etc.
I mounted the microphone on the upper left corner.
