SC Air Bag Recall Experience

Ammonium nitrate and spontaneous explosions
This happened in Aug 2016...the truck was carrying Takata inflaters and ammonium nitrate...crazy!

These raw compounds have to keep in solution or at least moist or they are unstable and lead to explosions. In addition, they are very corrosive to steel, iron and other metals before or after being processed. They have since been replaced with MUCH safer and non-corrosive compounds.
If these compounds are being used in airbags I can see why there would be random explosions. Given the facts on hand, transporting quantities of them presumably as was done in the 2016 explosion was predictable.
Why they don't use modern, safe ignition and explosive systems?

My recall experience was a little annoying. They had the vehicle for two days, fair enough and gave me a loaner, again fair enough.
However when I went to pick it up, the dash was put back together badly (misaligned nav screen) and I now have the ABS light randomly come on. Those of you who have had the ABS light lit, you get a constant tone. They examined the logs and there were no errors and reset the obd. It drove away with the ABS light unlit, but about 20 miles down the road it relit. I have since drove the vehicle about 300 miles (went on holiday almost straight from the garage) and the ABS comes on / off when it feels like it.
They also gave me a list of what else needs fixing on the car, like the wipers.

Well, ABC News is now reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling ten million more airbags. Basically, it looks like they are recalling the replacement airbags. More to follow I'm sure.

They are replacing the propellant, not the physical airbags. The propellant have always been the issue. But yeah it is aptly called an Airbag Recall. They have developed the final version of the safe propellant and now the campaign to fully rid of the interim solution in on. Hence Takata is no longer in business.

Full Gas Tank?
Hi- I see many of you posting about your gas tanks being full when you pick your cars up. Is that a dealership specific thing or something you get for being a part of this forum/club? Thanks so much!

If Lexus issues a recall notice, the Lexus policy is that the local dealer doing the recall work is supposed to fill the tank fully for the customer as a courtesy. All Lexus owners receive this free fill up; regardless of miles, age and number of owners of the car. I use Hendrick Lexus of Northlake near Charlotte NC and they always do a great job.

Ray Catena Larchmont Lexus said repairs needed for overdue NY State inspection--noticed when I came for the air bag recall--would come to $4,038. A second opinion from my local shop came in at $38. The difference was because my local shop could not perceive the front-end troubles Lexus listed, even when I mentioned their location, and paid extra for testing and measurement. The Ray Catena Lexus staff seemed surprisingly aggressive and strident in other ways, demanding $180 to replace a missing front-wheel grease cap, and loudly expounding how they would not expose themselves to lawsuits by giving me the inspection machine printout. Yikes. And I bet there is little government or pro-bono protection for oppressed Lexus owners.

Hey Tom, I've had issues with that service dept too but with my RX350. I'll never go back there for anything. I'm in Upstate NY so now I head in the opposite direction and go to a dealership near Syracuse. They treat my SC430 like a celebrity! I'll be heading there when the snow melts for this newest airbag recall.

I wonder if Toyota USA has a number to report dealers who are shady.
BTW, note the crappy responses from the GM at that dealership.
I had visions of The Godfather when I was reading the reviews.

There was a Kia dealership here in my area of Florida for a short time. The owner was in the commercials and was very pushy and rude to the women who were with him. I think his style did not resonate well with many in my area of Florida. He does have plenty of dealerships in other parts of Florida
Have you seen his commercials?
