"rolling" front fender wells

My 2006 SC needed new wheels/tires. Bought "lightly used" 20" Lexani wheels with new 275/30 Lexani tires in the rear and used Sumitomo 255/35 in front. Looks great but I do not like the ride. Too harsh.
Can I put more traditionally sized 245 or 255/40/20 tires in front without needing to modify the fender wells? Can the front fender liners be easily cut to make the larger, higher 40 tires fit?
I'd also consider 275 or 285/40 for the rear and I'm confident they will fit, correct?
Frankly, I'm "over" the whole low profile tire look, as well as the poorer quality ride. My second SC has the dreaded 245/40/18 flat run tires and they are indeed awful.
Design wise I'd actually prefer the taller 20/40 wheels/tires all around. Sitting higher, to me, isn't "too SUV" a look.
Regarding spacers, every one has warned me against doing so but if anyone out there feels it, too could be a solution happy to hear more about it.
And, is it peculiar to have a "shorter" 30 in wheel in the back and a "taller" 35 up front? Why might this be suggested?
Also, for the front, whether rolled fenders/fender wheel liners or not, might the new Lexani 275/30 tires be used in front? Is the possible problem with rubbing due to the width - 275 vs 255 - or the height - 20" vs 19 or 18" wheels/tires?
Thanks
Barry

Wow- you took on a big project with those 20s.
I would call or email CARiD, to ask for their advise. I just bought a set of 19's from them and recommended the correct rear and front tires since they were staggered.
They did not recommend anything over 19 because of the harsh ride.
They carry Lexani tires at a great price.
Good luck!
