Transmission plays the theremin (whirring)
Hey all,
I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but I'm uncertain on this one.
I did the transmission pressure mod last year and did a whole drain and filter replacement. I filled it back up with fresh fluid, the same amount I took out.
I know you're supposed to drain and replace after 100 miles to finish the service, but the fluid that I drained was still pretty red and the owners manual said replacement is only necessary under harsh conditions.
Yesterday, I was under doing diff oil and annual oil change (I buy the fancy filters and the fancy oil). I figured why not the transmission fluid for good measure.
I spilt some and guesstimated an extra 500 ml.
After a long drive, the transmission would whirr while rolling from a stand still and go quiet as soon as I gave it gas.
The fluid level was passed the IV mark.
I took out maybe 600 ml and with the engine cold and off, it was at the hot mark. Next day I go to drive it and no whirring! But now the selector makes loud metallic clunking and there's almost no power when letting it roll from a stop in drive.
I learned here that you're supposed to check level while warm and running, so I do this and it's now at the cold level.
I add back in 400 ml and now it drives normal again without a super loud clunking from the selector, good power from idle, but the whirring is back.
Any advice?

Normally it is better to have the level of Auto transmission oil to mid to low, than full. Overfilling has a lot more failure mode than underfilling. As long as your tranny runs between low and mid, you are safe. Most of us do a drain and fill, so we know exactly where we are on fluid level.
