Not on mine it doesnt. Mine follows the shift. Have you acually tried it? There wouldnt be any reason for all the other numbers if all it did was display a "4"

Go give it a try. I was demonstrating how the car reacts when it is shifted this way.
once the shifter has been moved to the left, I can move the shifter forward or aft to change the gear number.

////////////////////////// I think the problem here is that S is on the left and D is on the right.....at least on my car...... Our transmissions must be different. And, yes I just went out and looked at the car just to make sureEXACTLY!! Thats what I was saying. But if you move it from right to left when you are already at top gear (6), usually sometime after 60 miles per hour...unless you are accelerating with your foot in it.... It will downshift one gear to 5. Why? I have never moved it from right to left and had it show a 6 even though it was in 6. I can watch the Tach and see the downshift. From D to S is right to left in my car!

I will wait to see, but I don't think that is what BGW is saying.

When I shift from D to S, right to left, the indicator shows S4. I’m not sure what gear it’s in but I truly believe it is indeed in 4th gear. Per the explanation in my owner manual, the transmission is now limits to 1st to 4th gear. In the stiff hill, you can down shift to 3,2 or 1 for more engine braking power.

Interesting that you cannot shift up from there. Mind downshifts to 5 when I move the lever to the left and if I then push it forward it will shift back into 6. Or I can shift down as well.
I am going to use this downshift capability as an emergency brake if i find myself in a situation where I need to stop and the main brakes go out. It will be quicker than trying to find that Emergency brake with my left foot. The time saved could make a difference AND the emergency brake on MOST cars is really only a parking brake, not meant to bring the car to a stop. Some GM transmissions, TH350, are also locked up by the Emergency brake.

May be I did not make it clear. When you shift to S, your are in 4th gear, and the trans is automatically shift up or down from 1-4 depends on road condition. You can certainly shift up to 5 or 6 and the trans will act accordingly. I think, the intention for S shift is up or down hill driving ( just like L1 or L2 in older car) and not for daily driving. Again, you can S shift to 6 but that will defeat the purpose of D.
