I'm not an electrical or mechanical engineer, but it stands to reason that an alternator in "charge mode" as dictated by its internal voltage regulator, would "feel" the load in the form of resistance to rotation, and conversely, would spin more freely when not being called upon to charge the battery (for what it's worth).

After the engine is running, the alternator mainly supplies the power to drive the car. Small fraction of its power is used to charge the battery. So, if the alternator fails, most likely the cause is your car not the weak battery.
IMHO.

Well I am the son of someone the has a masters in EE and 40 years with GE as a motor specialist. The alternator will not "feel" the load of increased demand. That is the reason we have a voltage regulator.
