I bought a Valentine One a couple of weeks ago after owning one years ago. I've had it stuck to my windshield with the coiled cord flopping this way and that. I took my remote display and tried it everywhere, and then saw my ashtray.
I snapped out the little metal butt holder and low and behold, it fit PERFECTLY. I'm guessing either Mr Valentine has a SC430 or Mr Lexus has a Valentine. I hadn't really intended to take my console apart, but I did anyway.
It was worth it. My detector box is up on the passenger sun visor. One interesting thing, the IR focus thing set off the laser detector when I took the photo.

(I'm trying to get a photo attached, so bear with me)

I'm not sure I understand this installation.
I have the remote unit for the Valentine, but I use it so that I do not have to turn my head way to the right to check the readout. I tried several locations, and find the best for me is to use some velcro on the top of the dashboard all the way on the left side. It sits a little on an angle over there, but it's right in front of me and I can see it without really taking my eyes off the road. (I use the windshield mount and place the detector unit to the right of the mirror.) When I'm not using the remote unit, the wire goes under the dash.
If I had to look down into the ash tray to read the symbols, that's more time-consuming and distracting than looking to the right visor area. As for allowing the detector to run without lights, in this car, which is low and which has a smaller than usual rear window, I doubt that anybody behind or even to the side of me could see the main display anyway. My thinking is that the advantage of the remote unit in this car is not that you can run without the lights on the main unit but so that you can position the readout where it is more easily visible while driving at radar sensitive speeds. I find the extra 30 seconds it takes me to set it up well worth it.
Have you tried placing the unit up higher?

Anybody who doesn't think this is the best place to install your remote is a complete moron!
I'm kidding. It's a matter of what serves your purposes best.
I moved the display all over the place. I considered between the wheel and the speedo but I'm a stickler for exposed wires and it's harder to reach the mute button. For my uses, when the alarm goes off, I adjust my speed and glance down to see where the emitter is located.
This may seem unnatural, but it's gets to be reflex, no more difficult than glancing at the nav or the clock. It's not like it's a radar screen with incoming missles on it![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I also like the "james bond" aspect of having the device behind a flip up panel and the easy placement of the mute button. I like how I can hide the wiring too.
It's already saved me on speeding ticket butI mostly enjoy knowing where the speed traps are.
As for the placement, I played with looking at the car at night with the dectector mounted up high. It's very easy to see from behind with those big lights flashing and even though they're legal, I don't like flaunting it to the police. The car itself is a big enough target.
