Blend door motor?
Went for a ride yesterday and realized that I was only getting air conditioning (or cold air) out of the driver side vents. Researching this issue on the site lead me to a possible failure of the Blend Door Motor. Might it be something else? If it is the Blend Door Motor, would it register show up on a Techstream scan?

If you don't hear a noise, I COULD be it is low R-134 (Freon is the generic name)

However, the symptoms of low coolant are reverse of yours. Cold in Passenger, hot in Driver.

Thanks for the replies. There is no noise in any of the AC or Heater modes...just no cool or cold air coming from the passenger side. I think I will have the Freon checked as a first step. Would the problem I am having show up on a Techstream scan?

If it is not cool or cold, it must be warm or hot air

if so, measure drivers and passenger side temps.
Cycle max to min temps and record the readings.
I believe Daryl may be correct that you need to get the freon level checked.

I think at this point it might be best to start at testing the freon. I have owned the car for 3 years and I don't believe the AC was ever serviced or checked. I will get back to you after I set up an appointment and find out if this is the issue.

I am not saying not to get the refrigerant checked, but you are likely to be correct in your original evaluation. I have had two other cars that had dual zone temp settings and in both instances it was the blend door actuator. The symptoms were identical to yours. This was not on the SC. Both Subarus.

then you can watch the actuator move back and forth as you push the passenger side hot cold button.

you can disengage the actuator from the blend door arm very easily to manually cycle the blend door.
this is just an option if you have the time and minor skill to verify the actuator before you spend money on a freon check
BTW, did you check the temps at the vents?

if you want to check the blend motor operation, I think you just remove the panel under the glove box on the 2002-2005. Might be two screws.
then you can watch the actuator move back and forth as you push the passenger side hot cold button.
