Default SQOD - Stupid Question Of the Day

I'm changing from run-flats to standard tires. I have sourced most of what I need to mount the spare in the trunk. I bought a new wheel and tire as I didn't want any hand-me-down problems. I'm just not paying Lexus prices for the spare cover.

My SQOD is about the standard tire kit.

Given run-flats, why did Lexus provide a tire changing kit, i.e., lug wrench etc.? They went to the trouble of designing a mount and associated mat, rear liner, carpet for use with a spare. Why not make use of the tire kit space for additional storage when equipped with run-flats.

Mind you, I'm not complaining - it kept me from the additional expense of buying a suitable jack, etc. - just questioning.

I heard that Spares are going away due to federal "Miles Per Gallon" regulations. By adding run flats and removing spare tires, they can save 100 pounds or the weight of a child. If you think about it, the SC was designed in just about that era when MPG requirements went up.

I would guess Lexus thought way more folks would spend the $800 for the spare tire kit.. Have you checked out the price from

MegaZip - Genuine OEM Parts From Japan, USA, UAE | Online Store

Even with shipping most thinks are almost half the cost of buying it from Lexus. Are you looking for part # 64771-24043-B0? 2 or 3 years ago I bought 2 of them, one for myself and one for my sons 05 SC430 that I installed the spare tire kit in for him. I paid $86.71 each or $173.42. plus shipping. I believe BGW70 ordered some of the same parts that I did from MegaZip back then as well.

PS: Just checked and they still have them and they are now $103.96. Plus shipping

Yes, that's the part. With shipping it would be about $135. Definitely a cost savings over US dealers (around $175 plus shipping). Thanks, I will bookmark them.

While I bought a new OEM wheel and a new Yokohama tire, for stuff like that I tend to cheap out (maybe shame on me). Got a fake leather cover off Amazon for $15.

Did you get all the mounting hardware or is the tire just setting in the wheel well?

Got all the mounting stuff too. Everything except the tire cover.

Excellent I just feel so much better since I have replaced the run flates with knowing I have a spare in the trunk.

I'm going to pull out the seats to shampoo the carpets. Pretty sure I've always read to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes before disconnecting an airbag.

I tried to find a reference in the factory service manual, but all I found was a 90 seconds+ reference in the SRS section.

So, is say 2 minutes (120 seconds) good enough or 30 minutes?

Anybody have a Toyota/Lexus source for the 30 minute timeline?

BTW, I'm doing the 30 minute wait while typing this up.

I have a simple stupid question that I'm too stupid to quickly find the answer to in a search.

Considering a sc430 for the wife. On a 2006+ model, that has factory Bluetooth, does it have Bluetooth Audio? Or just phone calling features?

In other words, can I stream music from my phone over Bluetooth to the factory radio?

Thank you.
