Default The Ultimate Toyota Luxury Car

I know, this has nothing to do with our SC430s, but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing something very unique…The Toyota Century…ever heard of it? me either, but I sure would like a ride in one.

hahahaha…yep, I’m getting old…for some reason, the Japanese like curtains in their cars.

Here ya go right up the road from you. Low miles and looks to be in great shape. You could be the first on the forum to have one?

Interesting, it has a VIN of 00000000000000000. I'm not sure if that is real or because they just didn't know what it was at the time.

I had a Century once.

But it was a Buick Century from the 70's, not quite the same

I was just thinking how American the Japanese Century looked generally, with the exception of the Japanese writing on the controls and the right-hand drive. So, it's no surprise Toyota "borrowed" the name from America too.

The white one for sale looked like a good deal for a collector of Japanese cars, but I would find it difficult driving a right-hand car on left-hand roads. Anyone tried this, and if so, was it uncomfortable?

Ok so i am the only one who has ridden in these beasts?!!! Amazing.

Because heads of companies in Japan dont get paid like Yanks or even Aussies, they get perks. One of those perks is the equivalent of what you guys would call a limo. And of course it comes with its own driver.

Once i had become friendly with the top dude where i worked, one fine Spring day under the cherry blossoms the whole plant sat on mats for the annual pissup and eat fest. A true delight to enjoy. Anyway, some dude kept trying to speak to me in English and I was a little rude to him. Turned out to be the big boss and thats why my immediate boss was red faced and giving me the look. Later that evening I was summoned by Mr Ichiban. Uh oh i thought. But no it was because I was to cruise with the boss and two other in the century to the big boss's favourite hostess bar. All employees were expected to purchase Nissan's and got a discount to do so, but the top guy had a Toyo Century. It was a magic carpet ride that first time. Beautiful seats, lovely wood trim and plenty of space to put our drinky - poos.

For those wondering, I was stoked to go to a high end hostess bar. Alas, the big boss was in his sixties so there wasnt a a chick at the joint under the age of about 50! Skunked!

Later I was able to try the President ( Nissan Version ) which didn't have the same quality finishes nor engine power. Plus the v12 in the century was so quite and so powerful you felt like you were gliding. I always wished that i could have been in one going to a meeting in the country so i could have felt how they rode on the highway at speed. Alas, that didnt happen.

FWIW, a walk along the business streets of Tokyo will reveal loads of these things in alleyways waiting for their passengers to emerge then take them to a place for execs to get together and play Go before retiring to a hostess bar for some karaoke and endless amounts of Henessy and the best cuts of sashimi.

It's odd that it was imported from Japan to California, yet, can't be registered in California! Otherwise, I'd check one out.

Why can’t it be registered in Cali?

I got this information from the link provided above. They didn't say why, but I assume it is a safety concern with the right-hand drive. Or, perhaps it doesn't meet CA's strict smog standards?

It requires quite a few mods to bring it up to U.S. standards including replacing the glass with safety type etc. And forget California. 🙁

I found the Federal answer…
A motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS.
so this one is eligible…1997 and older.
see faq #7
