Default What Are Pros/Cons of Replacing Radio vs Nav Unit?

I’m considering having a digital multimedia receiver (DMR) with Apple Play and backup camera installed in my recently acquired 2003 SC 430. I would appreciate hearing about the pros and cons of replacing the radio or the navigation unit. Visually I would like the DMR to be installed where the Nav unit is (with the door still working), but I don’t know what else is controlled by the Nav unit. I also don’t know what else is controlled by the radio. I do realize that the radio has slots for cassettes and CDs. I don’t think not having those slots would cause any heartburn.

Thanks for any help!

this old thread by VVTiBob will help answer many of your questions. at the very least, it will give you more things to think about.

it is one of the reasons i bought the car i did.

don't be confused by the thread title. he did his upgrade in 2012 on his 2002.

Mike,
Your best bet is to replace the ML with modern now-a-day radio. It’s easy and the cost is reasonable. I wouldn’t mess with the NAV.

Do the search on this subject you will find ton of infos about it.
