you will need a GS shift boot to donate the plastic retainer in it and transfer it over to your IS shift boot. IS retainer will not work with GS ****
Or get a RC-F shift boot with the correct retainer already in it.

I got a galaxy s8+ lay my phone on its side. The bottom end lays against the inside of center console and the top laying against the shifter if that makes sense....

It's not where do you place your phone in the 3IS. It's where does your 3IS place your phone for you? lol mine always ends up on the floor after the slightest turn. The built in phone holder thing is ridiculously small. I'm sure after 11 pages though that point has already been made.

I think phone holders in general look silly in cars. But if I had to choose something, it would have to be small, black, and barely visible. Not sure how case friendly this would be?

That area where the ventilated buttons are is such a wasted space area. How could they design 2 buttons and use up to about a 4 X 12 inch space? They could have designed that to slim down the buttons and use that wasted space for a thin cubbie slot for either your phone, wallet or something slim line. Terrible design.
