True, probably not profitable right now. But when the 460's start getting down into the 470 price ranges theyll already have a tried, true, tested product out there.

Agreed!! Even now the pre-facelift 10-13s can be had at very reasonable prices if you're patient.
I use mine as an overlander, where it does quite well. This is up in Coyote Flats in the Eastern Sierras. Unless you really want to rock crawl, the GX should be plenty capable. I have no plans to get a lift, but I do have rock sliders I need to install. That should be sufficient for my needs.
Great pictures and really nice write up. I really enjoy reading it. I wish I have the time to make it to Bishop next year especially during the Fall. There are some good dirt roads in that area for great fall colors photography.
While I would like to do sliders at some point I plan to add protection on the exposed transfer case, AT oil pan and rear area of the fuel tank first. These all lay relatively exposed and would make for a far worse day when damaged.

The sliders are really there to increase clearance a bit rather than add much protection. I previously had skidplates on my Forester, but they really weren't used at all as trails that really require skidplates aren't conducive to covering ground and so aren't trails that I would pick for my trips. It was a close call, but for the mini-overland trips that I partake in, I decided to save the weight and just add a bit more clearance. Especially now that my girlfriend is coming along, she'll run out of bravery before we run out of capability.
I get it on clearance but you never know what you might run into overlanding so any and all additional protection will help with the capabilities. A hole in the AT pan will make for a bad day when you are 100 miles from anything without a cell connection. Always SAT and or one of these options...
I have Rocky Road sliders, which are sitting in my back yard, but the car might get a custom roof rack before sliders even go on. Installing the sliders is pretty low priority.

Not for me. I have an awning tent that I can use as sleeping quarters and if conditions are too windy for that, I'd prefer to be safely inside. Everyone's system is different, but mine is clean stuff inside and all the dirty stuff mounted on the roof.
