Volvo did transversely mounted inline six motors as well. Probably used blood magic to make them fit though, look at how close the engine head is to that pass side strut tower.

This straight six engine family has been a long time in the works for Mercedes. I hope it proves to be one of their best I-6's. It's good to finally see some concrete announcements and an AMG variant. The 48V electric #1 turbo is cool, too. It will be like a supercharger without a power sapping belt. It's like a FAR more refined and much enlarged version of a supercharged and turbocharged engine (ie: Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione rally car or Nissan March Super-Turbo).

I also vote for RWD and AWD only.

As god intended.

And they shouldn't try to do so.

This should be cool. What was the last Mercedes to have the inline six?

^ Big Mercedes trucks still use inline six diesels with 15 liter displacement

But as far as the last passenger car Benz in the USA with the petrol inline six, I think it was either the W140 S-class(the 90's boxy one) or the W210 E-class(late 90's, double round headlights)

Default Mercedes-AMG 53 | Inline-six turbo hybrid

429 horsepower for the CLS, E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet.

The AMG 53 line takes the new 3.0-liter inline-six that debuts on the CLS450 in Europe, but breathes on it some more. Originally this engine made 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, but when AMG is through with it, it's pumping out 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The like the non-AMG version, the engine is turbocharged and has an electric auxiliary compressor that eliminates turbo lag. And its mild hybrid system's EQ Boost starter-alternator can throw in an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque momentarily. That unit is fitted between the engine and AMG's Speedshift nine-speed transmission, all of which delivers power to the car's Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive.

You can tell an AMG 53 by its twin-blade silver-chrome grille, which was previously reserved for AMG V8s. Behind the blades is black lattice. The 53 also has an A-wing front bumper with silver-chrome front splitter and side curtains to reduce drag and direct airflow. Air intakes feature horizontal silver-chrome fins, and the car wears AMG side sills. Around back, there's a diffuser and chrome exhaust tips, and the taillights emphasize the car's increased width. The body-color deck lip can be optioned in carbon fiber. A CLS 53 has 19-inch aero wheels standard, and 20-inchers are an option.

Mercedes says the AMG CLS 53 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

They also take 11 gal of oil and can go 55k between changes, per my buddy who works on them. he was telling me about a DD16, I think it has over 2000 ft. lbs.

Inline 6 is balanced, it's a bit odd nowadays to have the torque number so much lower than HP when turbocharged, implying the HP number is not usable since it would have to be way over 5252 per the formula...

Maybe, but the car did change in a significant manner with every model designation.

C400 -> C450 gave upgraded trim and suspension, gave increased HP/TQ from tuning
C450 -> C43 is faster thanks do the 7G -> 9G transmission switch, offers many more options like AMG active exhaust and AMG sport seats that are available in the C63
C43 -> C53 gives a completely different engine, maybe the AMG suspension or other goodies like electronic motor mounts and improved brakes

BMW's change from x35 to x40 is much worse, as it's an identical car.

I would *love* a mild-hybrid AWD system with motors on the front wheels to improve low-speed performance where you might actually be able to use it on the street. This might not happen though, because it would out-perform the C63 due to MB saying they want to keep it RWD.

I'm a fan of any boosted engine and a sucker for inline boosted 6 cylinder ones. Nice work Mercedes

Look at the 335 as it transitioned from the N54 to the N55, circa in the sedan, from 2011? to 2012? Coupe hung around a little longer. The original was a twin turbo inline 6, with a true dual exhaust. What the **** were the bean counters thinking? The car came out with a $40,600 list price and had everything standard. Piece by piece the exhaust system alone listed for $6,300, and had 4 cats.

With the N55, they continued to use the word "twin," as in scroll. How many people with the 328 4 bangers truly thought they had a twin turbo? It says so right on the plastic (twin scroll). The 335 with the N55 became fake, and cost 1/2 the amount of the N54. By the time it became a B58 340, the exhaust became a muffler turned sideways like a Pontiac G6, costing 1/4 the amount of the N54. Evolution--push the motors harder through software, and save money on the hardware (which can be tuned on the aftermarket to create more hp / tq than stock?). If this is what MB is doing with the inline 6, if it's a C430, then we can all go back to the expression, "Do you even AMG, bro?"

p.s forgot about forged aluminum suspension components becoming stamped steel...that's unsprung weight
