Not surprised at the results considering CL dislikes virtually every new design and then by some Christmas miracle, said design starts to "slowly grow" on the previous haters roughly 0-2 years after release.

The psychological pattern is real.

The psychological pattern is real.

If that were the case, the Pontiac Aztek would still be on the market. That vehicle probably did more to kill off Pontiac than any other single cause.

The current Corolla & Avalon, and the recently superseded Camry has modern "contemporary" styling.

The current 2012-19 Corollas has achieved record sales in the US, peaking at 363,000+ units in 2015.
The recently superseded 2011-18 Camry has also achieved 2nd best sales in the US, peaking at 429,000+ units in 2015 too.
While unlike the 95,000 units of 2005, the current model 2012-18 Avalon has decent sales peaking at 70,000+ units in 2013.

The reason why the current Corolla has peak sales, while Camry has fallen to be the 2nd best ever, and Avalon less again is because of the oil price, and consequent downsizing to the Corolla's favor in recent times.
In the same way, the compact RAV4 almost doubles midsize Highlander sales, and both are also enjoying their best sales ever.

I was always taught to be myself, and to NOT pretend to be someone else.
It will be very interesting to see how TMC sales and profitability fares over the next 5 years with Akio's new interesting/non-boring designs, with inspired styling and inspired dynamics - as Akio tries to mimic his own Maserati that he races at the Nurburgring.
Only time will tell whether this ploy pays off.

GStar, it will be interesting to see how your beloved 5LS sells over the next couple of years.
Recently, the all new 2014 Mercedes S Class debuted with 25,000+ sales in the USA.
If 5LS can mimic S Class's 25,000+ sales or better, then hats-off to you.

Setting low sales targets like 1,000/mth to save your backside is no way to go about it.
Setting 5LS low targets of 1,000/mth and 12,000/year so that 5LS isn't embarrassed by 4LS's debut in 2007 of 35,000+ units is no way to go about it.
I remember back in 2012, my 4GS set a low target of some 20,000 units/year USA, so that 4GS wouldn't look as bad as 3GS which debut in 2005 with 33,000+ thumping sales.

Setting low targets is just a way to save embarrassment...

Sorry I don't know what you're talking about. If you think I care that much about 5LS vs S Class sales, then I believe you're misinformed or maybe have mixed me up with another poster. Although I do like both cars, I have never talked about 5LS sales projections and this is a thread about general Toyota design not the 5LS.

If you want to talk about what I actually posted above, I'm more than happy to discuss that.

If you want to talk about 5LS sales projections, I do believe there is a thread for that topic

I do like the look of the new Camry. If they took the powertrain out, and dropped the powertrain and chassis of the new Accord with a 6-manual in, I'd like the car......or if the new Civic Type R could look like a Camry, that would be nice. But it's the beauty is skin deep conundrum....the new Camry becomes a Hall and Oates...

I absolutely adore the Murai inside and especially out. Couldn’t stop staring at it at the Auto Show.

Recent TMC styling reminds me of origami - lots of flat surfaces, with straight edges, and sharp line angles...

Moreover, hopefully Akio realizes that the older the driver, the larger their girth, the bigger a family they have, and the deeper their hip pockets.
Thus, with age, drivers purchase bigger, more conservatively styled, more comfortable riding, and more expensive motor vehicles.

The main times when styling can be radical [in your face] with firm suspension are motor vehicles directed at the lower end of the market to younger buyers like the Yaris and Corolla, and sports models.

I would have thought the base Avalon should be more toned down in styling.
The in-your-face big mouth Avalon is appropriately their new Touring sports model, so TMC does have some sort of commonsense.
Hopefully the forthcoming more upmarket 7ES will be more conservative and more comfortable riding again, to match its higher price; spy pics do agree.

3IS seems to be appropriately styled with a degree of radicalism for the lower end of the luxury market, and seems to sell reasonably well since 2014.
4GS had a decent start, but 4.5GS may have been too conservative in the rear end, perhaps causing what was a decent 20k+ units/year to plummet to sub-20k.
I'm not sure if test drivers noticed the updated stiffer body structure, and new stiffer front dampers - and if this had affected sales, but normally most ordinary luxury car consumers would not notice this.

4LS had a rocket ship start from the 2nd half of 2006, only playing second fiddle to the original 1990 1LS, but 6 years later, the mid-life update in 2012 was too conservative to hold sales.
After 3 years, just like its minor 1/4-life update in 2009, it should have got a minor 3/4-life update at the 9 year mark in 2015 for the final 3 years IMO.

The 5LS is certainly conservative in styling but too boring, and yet maybe ironically too firmly sprung and too loud under throttle; they need to be conservative but stylish like previous generations of TMC products.
Will be interesting to see how the market responds to 5LS.

Overall, it's not too bad for TMC, but they could have done a bit more with their flagship 5LS, which should have looked like its stylish original prototype!

Mercedes "generally" are the best stylists in the world; producing conservative, yet stylish models.
