The price for parts has not changed much, as I am looking to get from Rock Auto as well. Thanks for the install price from your mechanic. This will give me a ballpark. A lot cheaper than buying OEM from dealer and having them do all of the work!

I just called two shops:
  • 1st (and closest to me) quoted $250 install for both front and rear - I have used this place before and they do pretty good work at a reasonable price, but you have to drop off your car for the entire day...
  • 2nd place I have never used, but someone form CL recommended them (Jeff's Lex-Toy in NH). They want 4 hours of labor at $98/ hour ($392 total) to install all
I am a little surprised that the 2nd place is so much more for the same install. I was assuming about 2-3 hours of labor.

So, my local Lexus dealer tells me that my front and rear brakes and rotors need replacing for my 2010 SWB RWD.

He quoted:

Front brakes and rotors - labor, parts
$362.88, $387.58

Rear brakes and rotors - parts, labor
$362.88, $409.84

Paying around $1523 for all four brakes and rotors seems crazy.

I called my local Toyota dealer. Same OEM parts:

Front total parts and labor
$525.00

Rear total parts and labor:
$575.00

i’m waiting on a quote from my independent. I’ve asked him to price Centric rotors and pads. He can do that, but says he typically works with other brands. I’m not sure what they are.

Please tell me what i’m missing. Thanks!

Make sure he prices centric premium rotors and position quiet ceramic pads. Centric has different lines.

Not missing anything, the dealer is just really expensive.

Does NOT take 4 hours to complete. Did it myself, with a floor jack and jack stands, all 4 corners, in under 2 hours. And that was taking my time to make sure I didn't miss any pins, shims, etc.

Yes, the time quoted seemed high. For comparison, Midas quoted $100 per axle to installl. Not going to use them, but wanted another comparison. I think I will stick with the independent at $250, especially since I have used them in the past and am comfortable with them.

Cross-drilled and slotted rotors absolutely provide benefits but they mostly apply to racing applications
And yet, you will see many race cars without them. Another aspect of drilled or slotted rotors, is noise. Here is a rotor from an F1 car:

Yeah F1, Nascar, Rally, none use cross drilled or slotted rotors.

This is a nice example of why a vented rotor is a dino'. The F1 brake pictured is carbon ceramic. It has excellent heat dispersion. To improve heat dispersion, iron brakes were drilled and slotted thus creating a system superior to venting only.
