Default Oil Filter Housing

Hey CL quick question,

looking to replace the oil filter housing on my 07 IS250 cause somebody stripped the oil filter housing plug on the top and I've just left it and did my oil changes without changing that gasket.

The OEM part number for the housing is 15620-31050, but upon looking on eBay there are oil filter housings that "fit" going under PN# 15620-31060. Can anybody confirm compatibility? Or maybe I should just leave it? I'm not leaking any oil and the cap works fine, but if anyone wants to chime into whether I should bother changing it.

Thanks

I'm confused. The housing is stripped and you've been changing your oil but not replacing the filter?

No no, I'm talking about the part on top of the filter housing, the drain plug.

You housing is different from mine then, because my housing does not have a drain plug.

Ditto - 2013 is a single item. No drain and not needed.
Less to go wrong too.

Aspect you saying the drive flange is buggered up? Striped threads would leak.

Are you talking about the square drive plug? I never change mine out. I remove the whole cap as one. Normally just check for leakages before I remove it.

Yeah I see that with the newer model housings which made me think about changing the housing to the newer model if it's compatible. The threads aren't stripped, just the head of the plug on top of the housing I guess from someone overtightening or removing not sure what the previous mechanics would have done to screw it up lol, so I can't take it off thus i've so far just left it alone and changed my oil and filter.

You might want to get in touch with Jeff Lange. He'll let you know if they are compatible. He's a Lexus parts Guru.

Yeah, mine's not exactly the square type but it's the same in principle.

So far I've been doing my oil change that way as well by just removing the entire housing. I guess I'll leave it for now and spend the money on more mods hehe, I'll change the housing if it ever starts leaking cause the rubber will wear out one day... if I still own my 250 by then anyways

The difference is between AWD and RWD models. The oil pan and filter orientation is different to clear the front drive components. AWD models have the filter housing mounted more vertically and so have a drain plug on the bottom into which a drain fitting can be inserted to drain the filter before removing it.

If it is just the drain plug head that is stripped, I would recommend just replacing it and not the entire housing. 15643-31050.

Alternatively, if you did want to replace the entire housing with a RWD one, I'm pretty sure it would fit without issue, however beyond looking a bit nicer, it's not actually functionally helpful, since you still won't be able to drain the oil before removing it, just like now.

My recommendation would be to get the plug and see if you can have any luck removing the stripped one that's on there. If you can, great, put in the new plug, if not, then order the housing. You'll still need the plug you ordered either way, since the new housing won't come with the plug.

Lexus changed from the hex bolt head type to the square drive type in 2008, if you ordered a new one, it would be the square drive type.

For reference a IS-350 RWD filter cover.

If you really want to drain a bit of oil out of it, you would need to insert the plastic adapter tube in the hole to drain oil out
