SC430 AC Vent Register Remove and Replace
All of the AC vent registers were broken in my car and I realize this is rare.
It was the vertical or up/down movement that was broken. They must have been dirty and full of tar, from smoking, to make them sticky. The previous owner did not clean them and instead, must have forced them.
The centers were easy to replace, I did them months ago and they will not be covered here. Only the far right, passenger side, will be covered because the left and right are the same.
Anyway, here is my replacement.
Passenger side vent
The whole register will not come out because there are screws holding it to the dash. The only way I could get it out would be to remove the dash, I think.
Here is the salvage yard register I purchased from TLS on eBay. I gently pulled and pried the front piece from the main body.
You can see the tabs here, two on each side.
Two more tabs on each side holding the vertical fins in place.
It comes apart very easily.
Removed and ready for installation, but I will set aside until the broken register fins are removed.
Just gently pry, I started on the left and right bottom.
Just slide it out
Next, remove the vertical louvers or fins.
Now just place the new louver assembly in the slot.
Push on the edges and you should hear a little click.
Install the cover, start at the top and line up duct work. You will understand if you are doing this yourself.
Click all four sides. That's it!

So, I know this is quite old but thanks for the tips on getting the cover off (my entire set of shop manuals doesn't reference this at all) My problem is my vent won't open fully, like something is blocking the little "flap" in the back of the vent. When I rotate the wheel, it only goes about a quarter of the way. Any thoughts ideas?

have you attempted to remove the items like i did in the pics above?
you might be able see to what is blocking it.

So I did not try to remove the faceplate, but I peered in there with a flashlight, and it seems the "flap" is hitting on something on the right side. Seems like the ductwork feeding the vent or something?? I took a long thin screwdriver and pushed back on it and got the vent working for now anyway, not sure the problem won't return though. I released the glove box to see if it would give me access to the back of the vent, but alas, no joy! If I could somehow shave just about a 32nd off that piece back there I think it would fix it but I am not sure how I could do that. Its really a minor problem but it just bothers me not functioning properly.
But... I got to clean that cabin air filter while I was at it. Who the heck decided a cabin air filter was necessary anyway?
