I use the oversized Motorcraft or RP filter and 5.5qts for every change with no issues. I imagine as long as the car 5 qts in it everything will be fine.

I had the same issue. Senior Lexus service tech told me the manual was just incorrect up to the 2006 model year. At that point they corrected it. It took a few years but in the course of the relentless pursuit of perfection, they corrected the manual.

Consensus after all of the posts on this forum (mine included) is roughly 5.5 quarts with filter.

All 4 of my LS manuals are wrong ... the crankcase takes 5.5 qts. +/- to the full line on the dip stick.

Default oil capacity

quarts - imperial quarts can be confusing. Liters are always the same quantity. Igot a measuring cup with liter markings. Measure in 4.5l and pour.
The 2001 manual says 4.5 liter with filter; 4.2 without filter. It does not say it has to be up to the top level on the dipstick. As long as it is BETWEEN the lower and the upper line it is ok.
I am using Amsoil Signature Series 5 30 with Mahle filter Microstar OC 338 (Rock Auto - Amazon)

Repair manual says 5.4 US quarts if you change out the filter, and 4.8 US quarts if you re-use the old filter. It also says to recheck level after you run the engine (to check for leak).

As the engine heats up, volume for the motor oil will increase due to thermal expansion which causes the oil level to rise. Volumetric expansion coefficient for motor oil is about 0.00039 per degF. So for example, 5.4 quarts (measured in volume) at 70 degF will become 5.7 quarts at 212 degF.

I believe I put 5 qts in. I stop draining when it drips once about 2.5 sec. Also, the level, at least on my dipstick is different on both sides. I use the lower one.

Interesting that officially, dry is 1 qt. higher. This seems to imply there is 1 qt. you can not get out by draining. I would have to find my post, but I don't believe I measured 5 qt coming out.

Below are the global LS430 official service data sheets for 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 - this should settle the debate!

For my Apr2002 car, the Jan02 says oil capacity is 4.5L with a new filter, and over the years, I've used jugs that were 4.5L, 4.73L, and 5.0L. No problems with oil levels on the dipstick or oil consumption or anything when using any jug size between 4.5 and 5.0L.

So last weekend did my first oil change on my new to me 2004 UL. I used 5 quarts of AMSOIL XL 5w30 and a FRAM Titanium filter and when checking my oil level with the car sitting overnight it shows to be higher than the full mark. Now no matter what I do I can not get a clean reading on the dipstick meaning that I'm seeing oil different locations above the second mark (full line).

Always read from the lowest side on the dipstick. If one side of the dip stick is higher than the other you always read the lower side. If you think about what I am saying, it will make sense.

I have changed the oil on my 2006 approximately 25 times so far. Using an oversized XG3600 oil filter, I refill with approx 5.5 quarts (plus or minus 1-2 ounces) to reach the dipstick full mark. I typically let the oil drain for 15-20 minutes.

Have 3UZ-FE installed In 1999 LS400...

Using an oil extractor to remove oil, and with 90915-YZZD3 oil filter change requires about
6-1/8 or 6- 1/4 quarts of oil.

Hope this helps.

Default Oil change in Lexus LS430

I just changed my own oil Friday and added 5 qts with a Toyota filter. Drove it around the block and let it sit overnight. It was a little over half way up the stick. I added .5 more qts and it still did not get to the full mark. Today I dumped in the last .5 qts and it is about .25 inches over the full mark. So I have concluded to put mine right on the full dot, I should use 5.75 qts. Not gonna do that. I went with 6 qts just like my 98 LS400. Every time the dealer changed the oil for the last 65K, they charged the previous owner for 6 qts. I can't explain why but it seems there is a slight variation in the amount of oil our LS430's take. Some say 4.8, some say 5.5 and I say (LOL) 6....

I wouldn't be slightly concerned about .2 qts extra.

By the way, Is the handle on your dipstick a yellow circle?
The dealer says 4.8 quarts including the oil filter.

^ I would go by RKW and the excerpt from the manual in post 36 over what the dealer is saying. Dealers are known to be wrong. The repair manual speaks for itself. If you go by the dealer, check you dipstick.
