I spent a better part of the last week trying to figure out what this thing is. Whatever it is it seems like it's leaking and needs to be replaced. But I can't for the life of me figure out what it is other than its a solenoid.
LOL i swear to god first instinct i thought that too, but thats RIGHT under the PS pump right?
I'm not entirely sure if it's under the PS pump as I still don't know where everything is on this engine. Here are some better pics of the location of the thing though.
Pretty sure that's your hydraulic fan pump leaking.
Yup, youre right that does go to the fan pump. From what i can tell it doesnt look like the pump itself is leaking though. Seems like whatever its spattered all over the pulley underneath came from the solenoid thats attatched to the pump. So now i gotta figure out what the part number is to that thing and where to find one.
That's the control solenoid for the hydraulic fan pump
It controls the fluid flow to the fan based on the signal from the ECU making it spin faster as needed
It will probably be a dealer only part
OK!
So i called the dealer and explained what i was looking for and after a few attempts we located the part.
The part # is: 16929-50050 and the 'official' name for it is HYDRAULIC MOTOR CONTROL VALVE
The dealer sells it for ~$250 (Jesus F#@%)
Anyone know of any place to find it for less or maybe an equivalent part off another lexus/toyota?
Either way thanks for helping me figure out what the damn thing is
This must be a common on the 98+SC400s then, I've got the same issue, not really a leak but just seems like dried out wet material on the pulley. It looks wet but nothing is leaking.

thats exactly whats going on with mine. My mechanic said its because the solenoid is leaking on it. Could be hes wrong i suppose, but i know the pump isnt leaking because ive had the car for about a month now and the fluid level hasnt moved.
It's the potting used to seal the inside of the solenoid that's leaking out
Mine is doing the same thing although it seems to have stopped since I've owned it and now have the cooling system in good order (unlike the previous owner)
I have a used motor in storage that has the same issue
My guess is the factory didn't use a hi enough temp epoxy
Well looking online i found the original part number for sale at ~$120. I figure if the original one lasted 150k miles i dont see a reason to get the more expensive one
Hello there

looking for a new part, finding it hard to locate it all the way from Australia
