I'm not sure. I did start the car with the whole stero out and there are no menus. Putting everything back together.

My solution to quieting the hard drive, covering the tray cover with foam tape. I don't know if it will do anything, but since I had it out...

Put everything back together. If anyone else attempts this and can successfully clone a toyota/lexus hard drive please update this thread.

I'm returning the ssd to Amazon.

Wait!

Did you try with linux?
I know in some instances linux can bypass some of the restrictions and also give you better control. It could even be a formatting thing or the software on the drive. Try getting a copy of linux running if you can and see if you can read the files that way.

Although now I'm curious, if you replace the HDD can you also update the GPS and overall Lexus Enfrom system with that? I think is worth a few more attempts. I know someone dumped the GPS update for 2014 models and up so that might have some kind of key file in there.

I already put the stero/nav unit back in the car.

This video shows you how to remove the stero/nav unit. My pictures show the location of the drive in the stero/nav unit. No I didn't try with linux.

I think they locked it down so that people can't sell unauthorized copies of the HDD.

If you wish to unlock the hard drive (for cloning), here are instructions: https://geekscrowd.wordpress.com/201...our-hard-disk/

This was the solution that someone posting with the exact same problem here: http://www.tomsguide.com/forum/id-18...ard-drive.html

Just passing along some information. I would be curious to see if there are any performance gains because of this. I know first hard the benefits of a SSD over a traditional HDD, although the bottleneck here might not be the I/O of a HD, but the Nav's processor as tejanp rightfully pointed out.

So based on that website, we're thinking the password is "32 spaces"....for the Toshiba drive that OP has (and likely all of us).

I think the key takeaway point here is that doing this method may lockout the drive completely...which would then make it not work in the car. Proceed with caution.

I'm not brave enough to mess with a locked hard drive other than attempting to clone it with software. If the drive becomes unusable in the car, it's too expensive to replace from Lexus.
I'm hoping someone more technical/knowledgeable than me can use the information I posted to remove the drive and attempt to clone it.

The password is probably the VIN number.

Some users over here work with Lexus dealers I'm sure they can chime in if this is possible or not.

Very cool idea, I'm guessing you could probably just dd the drive from the source to destination if you mounted it in linux. I'm not sure what type of filesystem is used on this drive. I could probably figure out something but then again I'm not going to experiment with my personal drive. Perhaps there are some on ebay that could be purchased. I'm more interested in if someone could break into the ECU so some could develop a supercharger/turbo kits for our cars.

A replacement cost 1500 dollars. Maybe I should set up a go fund me and then see if I can raise some money to get one and try cracking it. There has to be a way.
