Default Power Steering Fluid Replacement

I am thinking of just doing the pump and replace in PS reservoir. Not gonna do a flush. You will need to pull all the plastic trim rivets and remove that front engine bay cover that covers radiator to get at PS reservoir. It is super easy to remove though.

I just use one of these cheap HF pick kits to get at the plastic rivets.

From FSM here is total capacity of the system.

I'll probably run a total of 2 quarts through it as that AT fluid is dirt cheap. I could do it one session but will probably span it over a couple drives. This should give it a pretty good clean out.

My recommendation:

1. Jack up front with wheels off the ground.
2. Use turkey baster to remove old fluid from reservoir and replace it with fresh fluid.
3. Disconnect the return line and hang it into an empty container.
4. Turn the steering wheel side to side (without starting the engine) while constantly pouring fresh fluid into reservoir until clean fluid comes out of the return line.

That's how I have always done that on all my vehicles.

Good tip.... I've done something a little similar before but didn't do #3 and started up each time after replacing reservoir fluid

OK... took the lazy route with this fluid swap and noticed something unusual. Fluid did look somewhat dirty and I used Dexron III as replacement

I have seen other threads about some having shimmy wheel issues.

I have had an occasional wheel shimmy that I attributed to a wheel balance issue and would often notice it several times on my drive to work. Nothing major but it was noticeable. I was going to take in for a balance when I had time. I noticed that as I got close to swapping 1 quart (I was just emptying/refilling PS reservoir before each drive) my shimmy symptoms got less and less until I haven't noticed them for several days.

Is this crazy to think this would alleviate this issue? Something in rack partially blocked or inadequately lubricated to account for this? If it keeps up for the next week or so I will have to assume cured.
