while installing my rear strutmasters kit i noticed a leak in 2 places...1 seems to be left valve cover gasket leaking oil... and 2nd im not sure i think its the transfer case leaking and i wonder if this is common or maybe my bumpy ride did this ?
the tire/wheel you see in the pictures its the front left tire....
if someone can please help me with parts that i may need to fix this leak is it a gasket or seal or something ?
also i know i may looose some oil doing this repair if i am correct i need either mobil 75w90 oil or 80w90 ?
that's the transfer case leak, its relatively common. keep it topped off until you can fix the leak.
The leak is on the O-ring where the black box goes into the transfer case.
if you don't fix it or let the fluid get low, you will break the transfer case eventually, I bought mine with this issue and the transfer case was shot it would clunk crazy loud on acceleration.
I swapped in a newer transfer case, but if yours isn't making any loud noises and driving fine, then just replace your o-ring and refill it and it should be good to go.
I can't remember if its 75w or 80w but any fluid in there is better than no fluid for the time being.
a bunch of fluid is going to come out and its a delicate process to remove and reinsert that black box (referring to shortcut method without opening the whole case).
I would drain it before doing it, and then replace all the fluid with some new fluid, consider it a transfer case service.
there is a couple threads on fixing it, it can be expensive at the dealer but if you DIY it can be done for alot less especially the quick way.
do some research on it but its good you caught it before anything bad happened.
How many quarts would you need to change all of the transfer case fluid? Does this also go in front and rear differential?
I got the front and rear differential fluid changed by my Toyota dealer - not sure if they also changed the transfer case fluid as part of this service.
