Lightbulb HVAC Blower Motor (front)

Okay we have only had the SUV for a few weeks...and really love it! Wow, what a good decision.

I did have one little area of concern that I thought I would seek advice on before contacting the Dealer. Our's is a CPO 2015 with around 25k/miles. Everything so quiet, you REALLY hear the AC fan. It's a high-pitched noise - almost like trying to tune in an old radio station (some of you might not have any idea what that means). It's definitely the fan motor (noise level changes and/or stops with AC controls) and I've already replaced the cabin air filter and checked that area for debris/blockage. BTW, when replacing the cabin filter you can easily see and reach the fan. I tried spinning it by hand and it certainly moves, but stops almost immediately. I would have thought it would spin freely but it doesn't.

Advice?

Looks like the fan can be dropped pretty easily for a closer inspection and to ensure noting has made it past the filter as well.

As far as Debris/blockage goes, does recirculate and the fresh air settings make a difference? Fresh air is brought through from the outside vents below the windshield wipers, right? Not sure where the recirculated air is brought in from, guessing from under the dash?

Our research team (Acrad35751) will look into this

Thanks for all of the info you provide here Acrad35751 Is research part of your job or is it something you just enjoy doing?
Anyway, thank you sir!!

Most likely under the dash... here are some interesting diagrams including the rear unit since it was in the same chapter :-)

Hi...
If it's a sort of 'whistling' sound you hear... I think it's a result of air moving through the vents at a particular air volume vs. vent opening size.... I get it when my fan is on '3' and my front vents opened half way...

Not sure if that's your isssue or not, but I also have a 2015 CPO.Lux, and have noticed the high pitched 'whine'.
And I too thank Acrad for his frequent help!

Thanks!! I'm probably looking for just as many answers to my questions as everyone else. While the GX isn't rare... it is certainly far from mainstream like a Ford Explorer so answers to issues are harder to find. While it is marketed elsewhere in world the current engine isn't available everywhere as well. I find myself trying to cross reference issues over in the Tundra forums. I then see the 4.6L is actually far less chosen than the 5.7 who choose the latter like 8 or 9 to 1 over the 4.6.

FWIW, our truck (2011 with 65k) would make a whining noise, which would get louder as the fan speed picked up.

The dealer replaced the blower motor under warranty (L cert). Problem is gone.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but does anyone know if this service is covered under the b2b warranty?
Every time I turn the car on, there is a mold smell blowing from the vents as well as when I'm driving with the blowers off and natural air is coming through. After initial warm up it seems to go away and the car smells like a normal Lexus again.
The previous owner brought this issue up several times according to the service history and it looks like the cabin air filters were changed each time and the "evaporator cleaning service" was performed which I assume is the above fix?

So you are the second owner of a 2016 and the previous owner is on record of bringing the smell up several times
Anyway, might be time to check with a specialized shop if it has been treated several times with no success. It is on record and you are the fourth complaint so maybe it is time for Lexus to start replacing parts like the evaporator.

2016 with this problem I would not pick the truck back from the dealer till it's completely fixed, if the dealer can't figure out contact Lexus corporate. Trust me I goto car auctions and I see new Lexus vehicles with Lemon stickers on the windshield.

BradTank's suggestion is a good one and generally works pretty good for me too. Not sure if less effective in the more humid areas of the country.

You could try one of these over the counter products you spray into the exterior HVAC intake while system is running.

Default 2017 GX460, Can anyone disable the rear air conditioner?

Hey CL,

I have been reading my manual and I found out that there is a button to turn off the rear air conditioner controls (While the air continues to flow) but when I get to the screen on my car, it simply doesn't exist! (button no.6)

What you guys think?

Last I read of this was here. Seems to be a missing feature that is in the manual.

Speaking of that, there are few things that are missing which is described in the manual. I agree, those are software issues and either it is a bug, or just been disabled for a reason. For example, according the manual, when in reverse, the parking assist sensor warning should also be displayed on the up right corner of rear view camera screen IN ADDITIONAL TO the center of instrument cluster, it was on every other model of lexus but not on GX! I asked dealer, and also look at other GX on the lot, none of them worked as described. Also to keep in mind, GX is the only one in Lexus that still offer the touch screen, it could be have the impact on specific screen area which has to be reserved for particular reason (just a wild guess), which need to eliminate certain icons (or soft buttons). Because the base of the software (OS) needs to be able to apply the full line of the lexus, and manual may have some common areas which has not been revised for specific model (which it should IMHO for lesser confusion).
