I may have posted this in another thread but can't remember ... anyway... this should be something the '14-'16 owners should be aware of as they are not out of the woods and could be affected by the air valves sticking from freezing temps. This may affect earlier years as well even though TSB doesn't list it..not sure
tecman: I was looking closer at the new and old parts pictures you posted.
Does the removeable cap piece now have a ridged section unlike the stock one that was smooth all around? It looks like I see a ridge in the lower left corner of foam on the new cap. Can you confirm?
I know it only addresses one piece of the failure but I am gonna put one of the Uni filters on there and keep the spare parts in case I need to return to original state. I know it will more likely be the valves that fail.
I really don't like that sponge piece sitting in there.
Since I took the cover off for this, I removed the internal filter and put on my original external Uni filter. I just have a bad feeling about the internal filter. I do plan to reinstall the bypass.
LOL...over the weekend, as I was refilling the windshield washer fluid, I thought to myself that I probably should put the filter back again and remove the foam because rain season is coming and it may get wet somehow.

Mine will be here from Amazon order next Tuesday... I will install mine next week. As much as this sucks it is covered by an extended warranty and even beyond that there are some far more reasonable repair cost options. We have the bypass kit option as well as aftermarket parts installed by an independent or shade tree mechanic that are a relative bargain compared to what dealership would charge. I'd probably go bypass myself since the state I live in doesn't do emission checks on anything 2009 or newer.

Was the filter supposed to be black from the factory? Popped my cover off today and mine is a reddish/brown color. No signs of degradation and I spun the little fan blade and it was clean and clear...
I think it is more a darker color... not sure about black though. tecman has a picture or two of his replacement foam in earlier posts.
I was thinking more about this other day and scenarios that could draw the foam into fan. Mine seemed solid as well but I didn't immerse it in water either to see what form it took. In addition if water was introduced through whatever means does that air pump have enough draw or vacuum to simply pull existing foam out of rest spot and into the fan blades? Or does it only take a small amount of water for the foam form to collapse and be drawn toward the vacuum?
This seems to be an area one wants to cover up if they frequently wash their engine bay. The TSB and later years add the cover to reduce water intrusion but this would seem to only address water from the top. Off-roaders and/or water from the bottom could still cause intrusion... even '14+ for that matter.
Just a lot of speculation on my part and potentially self-justifying the addition of the aftermarket filter and pulling the foam out on mine. :-)
EDIT: Perhaps even water forced up through some automatic car washes for the underbody spray program of the wash sequence?
