I didn't list any small diesel SUVs (even the upcoming ones) as competitors because IMO they don't really compete with small sedans in the Cruze's class.

While technically correct, I think anyone looking specifically for a diesel will cross shop classes because of limited availability.

If I was in the market for a long-distance commuter that got epic fuel economy at a bargain basement price, this would be at the top of my list to test drive. 52mpg from a non-hybrid car with 4 doors and an actual back seat (not a honda fit-sized car) is impressive.

I am still waiting for the first diesel electric hybrid, and I will watch the MPG #'s soar.

Seeing as I've accidentally* gotten fuel (of any type) on my hands or clothes a total of three times in two and a half decades of driving, I don't exactly see how this is an issue. I guess if you're a messy person who spills everything on yourself it could be a problem.

*This count excludes changing fuel filters, where it is planned and unavoidable to get fuel everywhere. That would add another 5 instances to the above. But one expects to get messy when one takes his/her own car apart.

With all due respect, bagwell, (and I don't bring this up to be rude), no, not enuf' said. Jill is correct. With cars, it's not always a question of what we would LIKE to do...it's what they were designed for. Not just with Toyota and Lexus products, but with most modern vehicles, it s not recommended that any more gas or diesel-fuel be added after the automatic click-off on the nozzle....or, if so, just a very small amount. That's because if too much fuel stays in the filler-pipe, besides the obvious problem of running onto the fender and staining the paint, it can run over into the charcoal canister and damage it, which can affect fuel-vapor emissions, trigger a CHECK ENGINE light, and cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test, if your district has one.
