Default All new VWs now have 6-year/72,000-mile warranty

Earlier this year, Volkswagen introduced an impressive 6-year/72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, meaning that everything from cabin electronics to the engine and transmission were covered. But oddly, it was only available on the Tiguan and the Atlas. Now, VW has expanded the warranty from those two crossovers to the entire VW line. So now you can drop in and pick up anything from a GTI to a Passat and have over half a decade of worry-free driving.

This warranty is a big upgrade over Volkswagen's previous warranty, which was bumper-to-bumper only for 3 years or 36,000 miles. The 3-year/36,000-mile coverage is also used by Ford, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, General Motors, Mazda and Fiat-Chrysler. Those brands do include a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which still doesn't match VW.

The only companies that come close to Volkswagen's warranty are Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi. Each company has a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which is lower than VW's, but they also come with 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties, meaning the engines and transmissions will be covered longer. Kia and Hyundai's warranty takes a hit with resale, though. If the owner of a Kia or Hyundai sells the car, the powertrain warranty only partially transfers, with the new owner getting just 5 years or 60,000 miles. Volkswagen's warranty is fully transferable to an owner purchasing the car used. Mitsubishi's warranties also fully transfer.

I wonder how this will affect sales? As stated, this would be the longest bumper-to-bumper warranty in the industry.

Partially true, but also partially misleading. Lincoln, Lexus, Buick, and Cadillac, which are all part of Ford, Toyota, and GM, offer a 6/70 drivetrain and 4/50 bumper-to-bumper, which is significantly better than the 5/60 and 3/36 offered by the rest of the divisions in these corporations (Chevy, GMC, Toyota, and Ford). Agreed, however, none of them offer 6/70 bumper-yo-bumper like VW now does.

The article doesn't specifically mention it, but it's obvious why VW is doing this....probably doesn't even need to be debated. It's a move to try and bring back consumer confidence in the company after the scandal.

These warranty extensions happen all the time. Interesting to note is that Toyota is 60K in some parts of the world but just 36K in North America. Mazda is unlimited in Canada but not in the USA. I think the VW MSRP prices will go up going forward. Anyways, extending the warranty is good news for the consumer.

One possible clue could simply be the population of the two countries...and the number of vehicles sold. it's one thing to cover the vehicles, for an unlimited number of miles, in a country like Canada with 36 million people....quite another in the U.S., with almost ten times as many.

They had to do something. One of the knocks against a VW vehicle as it ages is its expensive fixes for the drive train department. Very nice solid vehicle line but of course now they're pushed into a corner. So that means the only way to generate more cash is to reassure buyers that they can buy one of these vehicles today and not have to worry about expensive issues for the next 6 years/72K.

It's the only way they can preserve the reputation of a fun snappy brand with nicely styled sedans and hatchbacks. They're in a lot of trouble so this is in fact an appeal to consumers who usually back away from a VW, especially after it's been used.

That's right. The warranty extension was a marketing decision to get more bodies into the showrooms. There would have been some, minor analysis done by accounting but it was probably argued by marketing that the extra cars VW can sell by extending the warranty would cover the additional costs.

As of today, per their website, the Audi American-market warranty is still 4/50 Bumper-to-Bumper and Drivetrain...but I can't imagine VW, the lower-line division, outdoing upmarket Audi in the warranty department very long. I wouldn't necessarily bet the monthly rent on it, but my fairly strong guess is that Audi will, in fact, catch up. But, hey, I've been wrong before.

A friend relayed a story to me about his dad buying a VW sedan. He really liked the car until he had to replace the headlights. It was insane. Since he couldn't do it himself he took it in asking how to get it done. They quoted him $600. He sold the car right after that.
VW seems to have a few tools that require you buy from them in order to work on their cars. A friend who is a mechanic had to go out and spend $$$ on a a wrench to fix an engine replated part. Last time he worked on a VW. Not sure if this is common with cars.

Well, VW's scandel is your gain. If you love their cars anyways now you can get it with twice the warranty.

Warranty is misleading. My coworker had a Jetta GLI (ok yes we busted on him nevermind). Clutch failed. You can imagine how that one goes, but, he is an excellent driver who did not abuse the car. Go online, and there is a plastic part that routinely fails, and that's what happened. The dealer made him sweat almost a full day, stating VW may, or may not cover it, they have to upload pics to them. So what good is a warranty when dealers treat you like that? My sis in-law had a 2013 Passat, and the right side lighting (headlight, parking light, everything) went out. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. Huh? subsequent recall = covered. I have always liked the GTI, but would never, ever, buy a VW product based on others' experiences (not enough time to get into friend's 2006 4 motion Passat 6 cyl)...

edit it was a recall, not a class action--so imagine having to pay out of pocket for a repair when your car is covered by a full warranty, then have to claim to get it back? Terrible.
