Default 1995 ls 400 CEL code p0336, still running poorly after new crank sensor

Hello, I had purchased a LS400 a few months ago, it was running well until about a month ago when I had started it and heard a loud grinding near the front of the engine. The sound was intermittent and I could not pin point where it was coming from exactly, the sound ended up stopping after a few minutes and the car was running fine. A few days after that I notice my fuel economy is trashed, later that day the car develops a miss and is losing power then the CEL came on. Took it home and gave me a code for p0336, I replaced the crank angle sensor and its still running rich and missing so badly that it will die when I try to drive it. Been extremely discouraged from working on it recently and just want it gone at this point any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Review:

  • Do you still have a CEL?
  • Was the P0336 the only code?
  • Will your scan/code reader show pending codes?

If I were you, I'd check the waveform of the crank position sensor first using an oscilloscope. For the quicker troubleshooting, electronics controlled cars need an oscilloscope. It's not very expensive any more like

. As we use a multimeter, we also need to use an oscilloscope. Without it, it would be very hard and time consuming to fix electronics controlled cars. It is often a money throwing game without using an oscilloscope.

Wow that's super affordable. Man microelectronics continue to get cheaper and cheaper, with more and more functionality...

I'd simply check the amplitude of the NE signal. It should be more than 5Vp-p. Many aftermarket crank position sensors do not have enough amplitude although the engine manages to run.
