Default 2UR - GSE Ticking noise

Picked up my new 2023 IS 500 earlier this week. Naturally, I am busy cataloging everything that might be wrong with it.

This might be completely normal. At first I thought it was a loud tensioner or a fan or something.

Hoping you guys are hearing same coming from your IS 500's. Seems to be loudest on both sides. Can be clearly heard starting at :18 sec mark.

Oh I'm totally fine with it making that noise. I've owned a number of cars that sounded broken while in idle. I just want to verify that its normal.

It sounds healthy to me.

Sometimes when the car idles, it'll switch between port and direct injection, which causes a noticeable difference in sound. The direct injection is much louder.

Thank you @arentz07 !!

It is a brand new car, hence I didn't really think that there was anything wrong with it. Just trying to get a sense of what's normal with these. So far, idle ticking and felt transmission shifting kind of jumped out for me. If I had a service appointment coming up I would definitely ask to speak to a Tech about what I'm seeing. But since I don't... I get to come here and direct my noob questions to the community.

By the way, came across these vids that seem to provide a good baseline on what these engines typically sound like while idling. The sounds I'm hearing are in all of these. Therefore, working as expected.

That's normal; welcome to HPFP and DI injectors.

Thank you Kenny! Appreciate you feedback.

I seem to recall that DI engines had common issues with carbon buildup in the past. Specifically, Audi's and VW's. Is that a concern with 2UR-GSE?

This engine has both port and direct injection, called D-4S in Toyota engines. The port injection helps to clean the back of the intake valves, and this cleaning helps reduce carbon build-up.

Ah, that makes sense. Port injection alleviates the issue of carbon build up. Though, the families of engines worst impacted were/are DI only. There are mountains of data available on the issue. Here's a quick summary in case anyone is curious --> https://www.thedrive.com/guides-and-...h-a-gdi-engine

Glad to hear its not a concern in this case as the remedy requires cracking the engine open for a cleaning.

this engine will not have carbon build up cuz it have D4-S, and I can confirm even after 250,000km still no carbon build up cuz the 2GR-FSE in my 350 never had issues w/ carbon build up...

This is a common issue with the direct injected BMWs and Audis, especially the V8’s.

This will not be an issue for the 2URGSE. This engine has been slowly improved upon, tweaked and tuned incrementally for the last 15 years. It’s also arguably one of the best V8 engines ever made. It’s bulletproof and exceptionally reliable. I doubt you’ll ever have an issue with this engine, and certainly not with the injection system, as it’s a world class design.

Possibly this? I installed one on my 13 GS350. The part comes from the LS. It stop a ticking noise at start up that sounds just like that one in the op's IS 500 vid coming from the fuel pumps.
