Default Miles to empty

Made a mistake. Instead of getting gas at a station that's 4.15, I figured it would be around that same price where I live. Nope. Cheapest is 4.79. Yeah a 50 cent difference isn't the end of the world but still. My RX 350 says 4 miles left but I was reading that some people said to ignore that. Gauge still has a bit until it's at the E. Think I can make it the 14 or so miles to get gas at the cheap place?

I went 10 miles past 0, city driving but not exactly stop and go traffic. When I filled up it took 17.8 gallons. The question is: how much, exactly, of the 19.2 gallons is "usable." I won't know until I run out of a gas, which is not an experiment I want to do.

Since each each pickup/sending unit in the gas tank is a little different, running out of gas is the only way. And even that is subjective because of when you fill the gas tank, you are probably filling some of the filler neck, which is adding to the gas tank capacity. Any way you want to look at it, "your results may vary."

So don't waste any more brain cells on this. Try not to let the fuel level that low.

I've gone about 30 miles w/ the low fuel light on of which it took a little over 17 gallons.....so there was a couple gallons left.

Default Oh me too!

Yes, I know running the tank low is bad but sometimes you just can't get gas. I know that when that orange "empty" light comes on that I still have like 3 gallons left. There's a point when the needle goes down so far that I call "bad empty", huh, get gas asap!

Up until recently I always waited for the low fuel light to turn on before refueling. My new understanding (based on watching youtube videos obviously) is that the lower you let the fuel level get the more wear and tear you are putting on your fuel pump, especially since there is not much gas to keep it cool and gravity is not helping it. Now I try to refuel at 1/4 tank, but you know what they say about old habits...

No, the fuel pump does not rely on gravity. There is zero diffrence on the pump whether your tank is 100% full or 1/8th full. As long as the line does not run dry you're perfectly fine running dry in most cases doesn't do damage though some cars it will. Pushing the car is another story, having it towed can also cause major issues on an AWD if it is not a flatbed .

Older cars had steel fuel tanks and the less fuel you had exposed more
of the untreated metal to oxygen in the air. Now that the tanks are made
of plastic that "Old Husband's Tale" now only applies to vintage cars.

It wasn't on purpose but I ran my gas down until it showed 1 mile remaining on the info display.

It will say how many miles are left but all I know is mine is accurate down to 1 mile. Lol

I've run mine down lately below the "zero miles left" warning still had over a gallon in the tank (holds 19.2 gal in RX330). My M3 would read 24 miles left and within maybe 5 miles would drop to almost zero miles left.. I ran out of gas very shortly thereafter in Compton... not really a good idea. Our "miles left" readout is not at all accurate.

You're more brave than me. Lol

I looked down and saw 1 mile left and said (insert curse word here). Haha 🤓

I turned off the AC and babied it to the nearest gas station.
