Default 1999 LS 400 99k miles, burning oil?

We inherited a roughly 100k mile 1999 LS 400 that I dearly love. Kids drive it and they don't realize how spoiled they are going to be.
It has a burning oil smell, doesn't seem to be doing through much oil if any.
mechanics say that it is water condensing from air conditioner and getting on engine.
I am going to have the engine cleaned.
Any thoughts?
After it has been driven a while there is smoke coming out of the engine compartment right side bottom of engine.

Sounds like the valve cover gasket is worn out and the engine oil is leaking on to the exhaust manifold and burning. This is a rather common problem among aged 1UZ-FE engines. I'd check it as this video explains.

my car does this a bit too, i had the valve covers done when i got the timing belt done about 20k miles ago but that didn't change anything... i've checked before too the oil level never seems to get lower and i never see oil spots on the ground

It could be that there is a leak of transmission fluid (or oil) and the fluid/oil being blown onto some part of the exhaust as you drive down the road. I would look closely at the oil pan and transmission pan as another possibility. Obviously, if you have a transmission fluid leak your engine oil level will not change. If you have an engine oil leak, and the oil level does not change at all, you are "making oil" - i.e., gasoline is entering the oil, which could be from a lot of cold starts and the rings not sealing completely..

Best case- valve cover gasket. less than best case- VVTI o rings.

"mechanics say that it is water condensing from air conditioner and getting on engine."

If your mechanic really said this, get a new mechanic. One that you can pay to effectively locate leak sources.

That there doesn't make sense to me. How can the answer to "the car smells like burning oil" be water evap from the a\c?

OP must be telling the story incorrectly - I can't imagine a situation where any mechanic, no matter how bad, would arrive at this result.
