Default Toyota to replace nearly all 3.5L TTV6s in Tundra and LX

This is huge news:

https://www.motor1.com/news/727930/t...-tundra-lexus/

Toyota is stepping up for 2022-2023 Tundra and Lexus LX owners. In May, the automaker issued a recall for certain Tundra and LX600 vehicles with the twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine. A fix wasn't available at the time, but now it seems there is no fix aside from just replacing the engine. And that's what Toyota will do.

The recall affects 102,092 vehicles—98,568 Tundras and 3,524 LX600s. The problem is debris in the engine resulting from the manufacturing process that wasn't properly cleaned out. Any debris in an engine is bad, and as you can probably guess, this is bad enough to cause the main bearings for the crankshaft to fail. If this happens while you're cruising down the highway, it could lead to some obvious safety issues, hence the recall. Fortunately, Toyota is not aware of any injuries relating to the problem. But recall documents show 824 engine warranty claims that could relate to the issue.

When the recall was issued, Toyota stated a remedy was being investigated. Now, an updated statement says Toyota will replace the engine "for all involved vehicles" at no charge to owners. The recall applies to Tundras built from November 2, 2021 through February 13, 2023. For the Lexus LX600, it's July 30, 2021 through November 25, 2022. Toyota will begin direct owner notification by the end of July. Concerned owners can always contact Toyota directly for information.

Trucks shouldn't need brand new engines when they're this new. Still an epic failure on Toyota's part. Learn how to machine an engine.

I just don't see people buying these without the crazy reliability factor the old ones had.

The old Tundra was a brick.

It's kind of ironic that the only reliable turbo-6 engine in a Toyota is made by BMW.

I haven't done enough research.... the Supra BMW engines are solid?

And yes, very worth pointing out.

Not to go OT, but GM is having similar problems with the 6.2 but I think they ironed out the kinks by now.

Yep, they use the B58. It's been out for 8 years now and has proven itself to be a very reliable engine. They took everything they learned from the N54 and N55 and applied it. Combined with the ZF8 transmission, nothing to worry about from the powertrain.

Good to know! Yeah, the first turbo Bimmers had all kinds of problems like the HPFP, etc. But they blew everyone away in a race.

Incredibly solid. The B58 is one of the best engines BMW has ever made, and probably top 15-20 of all time from all manufacturers.

I thought the 6.2’s issues were cam phasers and dropped valves?

Same thing, spun rods. I'm not as good as you guys with the nitty gritty mechanical stuff so I can't explain more. It's bc of the same thing as these Tundra motors.

Its the right thing to do, but imagine you had an V35 engine failure a year ago, waited 30 something days (or more) for the dealer to replace your shortblock, and now you're going back for a complete engine. Warranty or not that's a huge pain in the ***.

Toyota used to be one of the top dogs in I-6 engines then they got so lazy. Shameful IMO not to continue tradition.

And you get a truck back that's seen the entire front end torn apart TWICE.

Not to go OT, but someone who works for my spouse has an Escalade that had a spun rod at 5k.

He was very disappointed, but GM replaced the engine and he's happy again. I have heard that GM makes this situation right quickly.

How is Toyota handling this I wonder?
