First GX460 Purchase Questions
Hi All, I am new here. I currently own a 2004 RX330 which I bought it 2018 which has been practically problem free.
I live in North FL and I am currently looking to upgrade to a GX 2014 - 2017. I've been digging through all kinds of sites such as consumer complaints to find the model year with the least amount of recalls / problems.
I really want a GX but is it even worth getting an older model like this granted the milage with be between 100 - 200k? Like I said, my RX has 255k on it now and still drives good but with three kids, I need something with 3rd row. Everyone says take it to a mechanic and have it checked out but none of these dealerships will let you do that. I'm trying to follow the CarFax (looking for 1-2 owners no accidents and with a good story like a southern car with no rust). I would love everyone's input. I also looked at the 4runners but the prices just don't make sense. The Used GX market is more affordable. I would love to get some perspective from some GX owners. Currently in JAX FL and looking at two 2004 GX's at the local 3rd party dealers.
Thank you for your time,
Alex

If you want a rugged off-road vehicle with a third row, the GX could be a great choice. However, if you aren't off-roading, there are plenty of better options for carrying kids.

With 3 kids, space in the GX would be tight. Using the 3rd row leaves next to no space for carrying anything else. Have you looked at the Sequoia? It has a 3rd row and is a bigger truck with 4WD that would handle your beach outsings.

The 3rd row is barely usable. Maybe for small kids and very occasional transport. Cargo room will be almost gone if they are in use. The unibody crossovers have better use of space inside, but if you need more ruggedness and a GX or sequoia type vehicle will work well. If you are going on the beach but not harsh conditions, a crossover with and might work ok without the compromises,

Agreed. We use the 3rd row for once-a-month trips where we need to haul a few more kids to a sporting event, etc. We once did a longer 4-day trip using the third row, but we had to use a roof cargo carrier for our luggage. When using the 3rd row, you'll be lucky to fit a single folding chair behind the seats.

dont have to tell them where youre taking the vehicle. do they have to ride with you? tell them you want to get a feel for the roads to your house, the interstate trip you take to your moms, which just happens to be 45 mins away one direction. or find a different dealer or go private.

The GX is a great vehicle and road manners are good as well. I would not hesitate to get a older model if it is in good shape and well maintained. Like any other vehicle there are wear and tear items which of course have to be replaced as it gets old and being a bigger / premium vehicle the cost may be higher.
As others have said with the 3rd row up the cargo is very minimum and the 3rd row is only suitable for smaller kids (leg room is tight). Subaru ascent may be a good alternative if you dont want a true 4X4, it does well on the beach. Cargo may be slightly better than the GX with 3rd row up but not great.

If you really need a 3rd row, I will not recommend the GX.
Go check out the Grand Highlander.

if you dont need center locker, v8 a few other things then the grand highlander is great. its awd, etc. multilink rear suspension. if i were to buy a vehicle now if i had to replace my gx i would get a grand highlander.
