Default Oil Consumption

Hello, I own a lexus rx 400h and recently the check oil light on my dashboard came on. I stopped on the right and checked the oil dipstick, which was at the minimum. As far as I remember, I had put a 5w30 oil from liqui molly. The former owner told me that the engine only used 1 liter per change and that the problem was that I didn't put the right one, namely 0w20 from Toyota.Since i've bought the car i drived it for around 6000 km. Have you ever encountered this problem of oil consumption from 3 mz fe? Could it really be because of the 5w30 oil I put on it?

#1 - Remove the bottom shields check for leakage - could be valve cover gaskets, a loose or cracked oil line, many things, also look from the top behind by the firewall. Be sure to check the lower oil feed line if yours is rubber instead of metal those are known to fail do a search on it here
B - Why would you assume the former owner is more knowledgable than the highly educated, highly paid experts at Toyota in knowing which oil to use? 5W-30 is recommended.
#3 - the viscosity is not the reason for your low oil concern contrary to the former owners bogus claim, 0w-20 would cause higher consumption due it being thinner but that is not your issue here.
D - Your motor is not known for oil consumption, it is quite rare

There are more there - searched "oil cooler lines". Your problem is more than likely a small leak at the valve cover gasket or similar area it will be apparent by taking a good look on top and underneath the engine. I have a RX330 w/ 171K miles though it was very dirty when I got it last year after cleaning and going through it it is all clean, stays clean, and doesn't burn a drop of oil. Another suggestion would be the remove the top engine cover (giving you a better look underneath it) remove the cover on the passenger side of the engine, the bottom shields and give it a very good cleaning at a pressure wash place/degreaser so you start with a "Clean slate" to find out if you've got any leaks. I do this annualy with all cars and do it with every new-to-me car I get. Simple Green or Castrol degreaser works quite well for this, spray it on a cold engine if you can, let it sit for 15 mns then give it a good scrub and hosing to get it all off

Hope this helps

Still should check everything for leaks, top to bottom never assume

painted my calipers red months ago and did minor suspension work/parts repalcement and had a nagging metal to metal clicking noise on small bumps. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was. I was ready to repalce the struts and strut mounts ($400)... after looking at this problem 3 different times I found I did not properly tighten the two 17mm bolts holding one caliper on. I blew it and admit it. Mistakes happen never assume anything. It is free, easy, and pretty quick to remove the bottom shields, top plastic bits and take a in-depth look at everything to see if you have any leaks. This should be done anually anyway. I've seen many-o-shop fall to do basic checks we're all human

Good advice above. Did you re-torque the valve cover gasket bolts after letting the gasket seat and running the car? If not, they can leak - just torqeuing them cold is often not enough. Simply running your hand back there can determine this.

Per your initial statement it appears your usage was 1 qt (distance from max to min on stick) in 6k km’s. That is not enough to trigger the warning light IME, but we’ll set that aside. That is 1 quart in 3,800 miles - not terrible. I use a robust 10w-30 oil or “Euro” 5w-30, and use about 1pint (1/2 quart) every 7,500miles in both or MZ engines, one with 184k and one w/335k. That to me is the “native” consumption of the engine, they have always done that and it has not changed with age and miles.

On high mileage RX the rear valve cover gasket, however has the PCV valve been replaced, If the engine builds up pressure from a stuck valve leaks will appear. I replace mine every 60k miles.
