What is the purpose of the oil filter clip? My 2014 Venza 2GR-FE did not have one? I am planning to install a metal filter housing. Will the clip interfere with the metal housing on the 2021 RX350?

Either holds the filter removal tool to the filter or maybe the filter to the engine that's my best guess. A part I've never needed.

Thanks for the responses. Does the clip interfere with removal or installation of the plastic oil filter? I going all metal filter housing on all the 2GR engines.
On the metal version, there are only two ears versus the plastic version which has more smaller ears to contact the oil clip.

I replaced my plastic housing with the metal one on my 2020 RX. No problems with the change over.

@Quantum501 the blk filter housing is a terrible design. Difficult to see the inside bottom for debris, not obvious if the large o-ring was replaced, and easy to strip after repeated use. What were the Lexus engineers thinking? My 14 Venza and wife’s 09 ES 350 housings are in excellent shape. Also the dealer wants $43 for the filter housing. Unfortunately there are Lexus customers had to had them replaced already. I think I paid $25.

I can't see that being the options. My tool is tight and the filter stays with the cap. I've wondered why this clip is there myself and came to the conclusion that it was for the cap coming loose. As hard as that might be, that's the only thing i could think of. I will say that i find it a pain in the a$$ but I'm sure some engineer thought it was a good idea. I've never had it on any of my other Lexus'.

When I did my first oil change the housing was very tight from the factory. Likewise on my wife's 4Runner when the dealership would sometimes do the changes, it would come back crazy tight and far beyond spec. So now I do all of the work and don't give the tech the chance to crank it on.

yeah.....really do not need to change the plastic housing out if you do your own work (and know what you are doing) or have someone that you trust to do it.
