Cut the speed signal going to the head unit and put the small switch in between. Otherwise your gps won't work.

Pole Position
ETA: Here are directions I found from way back when, among the 3GS DIYs. It covers how to do it and install a switch to toggle modes so you can get GPS for the nav when desired, kill it to watch DVDs, and ground out the parking brake cut-out for DVD playback. Not “simple” instructions, but should get you there.
Nav and DVD hacks
There may be better instructions somewhere else. At some point I want to get around to this once my current punch list is whittled down some.

There are portable DVD players online for $70. That way your passenger can watch DVD's with earphones and not disturb your driving.

In my signature is the solution. I can't remember it until I read it in my signature. Beat Sonic. It's plug-n-play from my memory. It's been in my car a long time, I can't remember. All I know is, when I'm driving, if I run into a screen with gray'd out buttons (because I'm in motion), I push the magic button and all buttons become functional. And yes, my GPS stops in its tracks, as-if the car is sitting still. Once I push the button to go back to normal, after about 15 seconds the nav figures out where it is. But I don't look at the OEM nav that much anyway.
My sons will be watching DVDs on our long trip to Rhode Island coming up in a day or 2.
