Jonnystan - we've already picked the location for this meet (scroll up a couple of pages and you'll see some of the details).

In short - we're going to drive Deal's Gap and spend some evening time in Cherokee, NC at Harrah's. I think it's about the same distance for you from Boone to Cherokee vs Charlotte (and the same for the ATL folks).

Default Deals Gap

Have you guys seen the website for this place: http://www.tailofthedragon.com/dragon.html

This road looks amazing. Me nor my Lexus are qualified for such a demanding road but I am willing to try. I'll be the one going about 10 mph, pissing everyone else off because they want to pass.

SickLex and Bitkahuna - all I can say is be SAFE!!!

LOL

*note to self, remove some of Bit's stuff before the trip*

I plan a safe - but certainly challenging - drive along the Dragon... I want us all to keep our 'stuff' intact on this event. This road is going to be fun!

One thing we should plan on is communications. I know a bunch of folks have those Motorola communicators and others have CB/decent walkie talkies.

I've got a 40 channel CB - other folks? I'm not against buying the Motorola if everyone else has one of those.

- if you are planning on going - especially if you plan to stay Sat and/or Sunday, let me know via pm or email ( davegs4@clublexus.com ) so I can give the hotels a general count of how many rooms we will need for our discount.
One thing about knocking on the Lexus doors is that I think it would be easier if we had a flyer or something to explain what's going on. Any takers for making one up? Doesn't have to be a work of art.

Planning to do one this week. Like you said, nothing fancy. Probably going to use powerpoint because I'm most comfortable doing a one pager in that.

Earlier today I sent an email off to the owners of the tail of the dragon site asking for permission to use a couple of their graphics on the flyer. I went by the Lexus dealer in Charlotte and spoke to the tech reps - they're going to hand them out for me here in town once done.

After I do the initial flyer, I'll post in PDF format for comments. Maybe let the Photoshop forum guys have a crack at it.

I 'd like to add a 'brought to you by' section at the bottom and include CL, IS300.net - and then Carson Toyota, etc. for those folks who donate stuff to us.

Default Details from DaveGS4

SE CL Meet: September 6 - 8
Several of us have been working on details for the meet and have some tentative plans to share so participants can put it on your calendar!

W H E N
We're targeting the weekend of September 6 - 8. This should give folks a little time to plan and arrange travel plans, etc. The weather should be a bit cooler for outdoor activities as well.

W H A T
We're suggesting:
- short local CL meets to form up folks who may want to drive together to the combined meet (and allow CL members who don't come to get together)
- day drives on some of the most challenging roads in the USA as well as the most scenic
- evening entertainment opportunities
- alternative daytime events for guests

W H E R E
A central location that most folks in GA, NC, AL, TN, and VA can get to (as well as other ambitious folks). We're planning on a combination Deal's Gap and Cherokee, NC event. Deal's gap is one of the most noted driving roads in the east coast. Cherokee is a small city in NC most noted for hosting a casino run by Harrah's (so those that are so inclined can do a bit of gambling in the evening if they wish).

People that don't want to do the twisty drive can go to Asheville, NC and tour the Biltmore Estate, and then meet up in Cherokee in the evening (about an hour away).

Some info on Deal's Gap.

Info on Harrah's

What's next
- Determine timing for the detailed event agenda. Most of the formal meet activites will likely take place on Saturday.
- We're contacting some of the local hotels for discount prices. If you think you're going to be able to come, please post here or PM me so we can get a count.
- We need some local participation. If you want to volunteer to organize your local area attendees AND possibly canvas for some local sponsorship, PM me

More info to follow! I hope other folks are as excited as I am about driving Deal's Gap, it's a legendary course.

We will have some safety rules to follow for the drive "on the Dragon", and will probably stagger cars in groups according to model & suspension modifications.

Default Lodging Info

OK guys, here's the deal on hotels.

There's another larger group coming into town that weekend and they seem to have a lock on all of the 'group deal' rooms with all the hotels I emailed or called. Bastards.

The best alternative I've found is directly through Harrah's as posted eariler. They have a special block of rooms reserved at $77 per night which includes two $10 certificates redeemable at their casino. Also have shuttle service there so we don't have to park at the casino if we want to go there in the PM.

The lady I spoke with recommended the top 3 hotels in this order and I have their availability as of today (8/8/2002 4pm):

1) Hampton Inn 5 roooms
2) Comfort Suites 2 rooms
3) Baymont Inn 10 rooms

There are several other hotels that have rooms (Comfort Inn, Best Western, El Camino, Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Craig's) that we can use as fallback. The deal is $77 per night regardless of hotel (less the certificates if you gamble).

To get this deal, you have to go through Harrah's reservations at 1-800-HARRAHS and select the options to get you to "Harrah's Cherokee". Unless you are a big time gambler with Harrah's and have a 'total rewards' balance (which is where they 'comp' you rooms) you can just tell them you want the package deal with the local-area hotels and give them the list above.

I suggest we move on this deal while there are still rooms available.

The Tapoco Lodge still has availability for that weekend for a more rustic setting and it is right on the road we'll be driving. It's more of a B&B/Lodge type place. Their rates were something like $79 room only, $99 w/breakfast and $139 with three meals.

I plan to arrive late Friday night so that I'm 'fresh' for the drive on Saturday AM and am going to make a reservation at the Hampton tonight. I'll also plan to stay Saturday night and depart Sunday morning.

OK I'm in at the Hampton. There is a 48 hour cancelation policy, so the reservations are changeable.

Also forgot to mention above, there ARE rooms available at Harrah's itself, but they are $199 per night (unless you're a CL high roller ).
