Default Modify SC300 Steering Column?

I'm having trouble finding a comfortable driving position in my 1992 SC300. The problem would be solved if the steering wheel would telescope further. Does anyone know if it's possible to extend the entire column, or something, to fix this driver position problem for me?

I understand that this would be an expensive proposition, but it's worth it since I'll have this car for the next 10 years.

Thanks.

Have you made sure that the Auto button on the steering column isn't switched off, or is there something actually wrong with the steering cloumn (i.e. it doesn't move at all)?

no, nothing is wrong with his steering column, i have the same problem. I opened up that whole area once and it didnt look to be modifiable easily, so I gave up.

Probably the only easy way to do it would be with an aftermarket (Momo, Sparco) steering wheel. You'd lose the airbag, but with a Momo hub you can buy spacers to bring the wheel closer to the driver. I've seen some pretty agressive spacers, like 50-some millimeter, as well.

If you can live without the airbag, and aftermarket wheel is killer. Trying to extend the steering column probably could be done, but would be pretty tricky and involve quite a bit of fabrication. Not to mention there could be safety issues, since the column is designed to collapse in a wreck.

Correct, nothing is wrong with my steering column. I guess I'll have to live with it because I don't want to give up the airbag and I don't really want a non-stock looking wheel in the car.

It did occur to me that I could leave the steering column as is and have the stock steering wheel modified so it was dished effectively. I could leave the airbag in etc. and have the outer rim cut off and then re welded so it was dished (extending 1" toward me), and then have the leather re-installed. Ok, I know, totally insane idea, but it would be the easiest probably.

dont know if this will help- but if you hold the telescoping button out, then once fully out, tap it out 8 times, it goes out another 1/2 inch or so (on my 96)... so check that out.

So, when you say, "tap it out 8 times" do you mean tap on the telescope button? Or do you mean tap on the steering wheel? I'm assuming the first, otherwise I'd worry you were tapping your steering wheel off!

Let me know.

Anyone else have this feature on their SC?

Thanks.

Should have been "an aftermarket steering wheel is killer" . Typos do make for interesting reading!
