as far as prolonging the life , use a a water repellent grease once a week or so as far a duct tape forget it for you will be wrapping it each time it rains or whenever you drive on the hwy due to winfd turb...dont get from the junk yard for you willnot know the condition if bent or if the the joint is popped or the quality of the bushings... contact steve at carson toy he will get you sympathy pricing im sure as far as diy piece of cake although easier if you have air tools

next time do not use pic\kle fork on these joints for the boots at the joint are very sen.. use a 4lb mini sledge and tap on the square part on either side if does not pop spray alittle liquid wrench at the joint area not on the boot itself to allow the rust that has caused the metal to bond break loose.. the rears require the same action or use a good tie rod puller

When you say use a 4lb sledge hammer, where should I tap it?
What's liquid wrench? Is that similar to WD-40?

When you say a tie rod puller, do you mean this?
I've never used one before. Will it hurt anything? I can't afford expensive repairs. I only wished I read this before I started working on it!

liquid wrench is more for disolving rust whee wd 40 is more of a lubricant..
the ball joint tool you showed is not quite the same one they use in the shop.. but it does look like it might work..the correct wraps around the head and pushes the joint out from the top down with a pointed bolt..
