Very often I hear a clanking noise from my front end of my GS430 after I apply the brakes. The dealer told me it was normal coming from the "brake assist" in my car. It is noticeable and quite unpleasant.
Does anyone else experience this noise?

Thumbs down

Never on my 98 GS400.

I'd love to hear the dealer's detailed description of how your "brake assist", whatever that is, causes this noise. Should be an interesting fairy tale.

Sounds like an answer from the "go away and don't bother me" school of problem diagnosis.

I have a 2001 GS430 with about 5000 miles. I don't hear any noises while braking. My recommendation is to get the service manager to go for a ride with you so you can point out the noise. You have to be persistent with these types of problems. If they can't or won't fix the problem, call Lexus regional headquarters for action. The dealership will lose some compensation if their customer service rating goes down because of your complaint, so you have some leverage.

Hang in there!

Default dzman - Brake Assist Noise GS430

Will someone with a 2001 GS430 please try this;
If you have your radio and A/C off and the doors and windows closed, pump the brake a few times.
I hear first a quiet hiss and then a "clank" at the end.
I was told this was the new 2001 "brake assist" and the noise is normal.
Does anyone else hear this noise?

Default noise

"Brake assist" is the term that Lexus uses for the feature that judges your braking pressure (and therefore relative interest in slowing down) and decides if you are in an emergent situation, at which point it goes ahead and stomps the pedal for you all the way into activating ABS.

I do hear a very soft hiss just as I initiate pressure on the brake pedal.........never heard any clanks except when ABS is involved (rare). My guess is that though your service guy might (might!) be right about the source of the noise, some adjustment needs to be made - clanks aint normal, and Lexus is so anti - NVH that I would bet that no one at corporate level even makes noise when they fart!!

So, does anyone know what, if anything, is different with the "brake assist" on the 430 from the 400?

My '01 GS300 makes the same noise from what I assume is the ABS pump. I agree it's excessive and loud at times, but it is normal .

Marty, brake assist was introduced on the 2000 GS400 (so I have it - not that I have any idea if it's ever engaged itself - although I've had one or two emergency brake situations). AFAIK, it's the same on the 2001 GS430.

Hi,

I have a 2000 GS300 and I hear that cranking noise when I brake and turn!!! The noise doesn't seem to come out when I brake in straight line or braking really hard. It's most noticible when I am not driving too fast (20-40km/h) braking and turning at the same time, such as turning into a drive way. I am going to the dealership next week to see what they find....

Do all 2000 GS have power assist braking?

I am also thinking it might be the brake pad ....
