Default Steering rack prices?

Steering is said to be leaking.. looking up solutions to getting it fixed, will watching how bad it's leaking..

If I can get it fixed for $500 or so, I'll do it now..

found http://www.carsteering.com/index.htm

they have the racks for $295... guess they are new(ish).

on carparts.com I saw them going for 200-250, but they arent new or have a warranty..

and I'm sure I could pay someone 250-300 to do the labor..

any ideas/comments/suggestions?

Dealer said the steering is leaking and I need to new rack/pinion steering assy, I had them inspect the car a little when I had the window thing fixed..

Going to change fluid first, had mechanic take a look at it, and said the leak isnt too bad, should be fixed by changing out fluids.

I'm suprised they didn't say your whole car was shot and that you need to buy a new one.

didn't know steering rack could leak...
did they mean your powersteering is leaking onto your steering rack?
or maybe they saw the power steering fluid dripped onto your steering rack
and the fluid drip off of that and thought it was the steering rack leaking.

The Steering Rack has many oil seals. I believe that Lexus sells a Seal Kit for the Rack. Typically, the Rack leaks at the rack boots. Anything mechanically wears and has to be replaced or repaired depending on your mechanical ability. Nothing wrong with a rebuilt rack, especially, if the rack comes with the Control Valve.

im pretty sure there is a leak somewhere on my steering cuz after a few weeks, i would have to put/add fluid in the reservoir and by noticing that, i could actually feel or tell my steering would get stiffer while turning.........but no noise what so ever...........

Brett, in case you haven't done this yet the cheapest price I've found was from www.steeringrack.com for $219.95 with a $99.00 refund for core exhange. Labor supposedly is easy and can be done for less than $100, closer to $60 or so. Mechanics with a lift can do this repair easily

are the racks from steeringrack.com reliable? obviously, the oem peice is ok 'til now. my steering rack's got a couple of stripped teeth so i gotta replace mine as well. i heard the ls or es model steering rack fits the sc and has a better turn radius than the sc unit. does anyone know if this is true? good thing i have a lift so i can change it out myself...

i believe thats the same company i bought mine from . It was on ebay in Dec for 149 plus 100 core. Of course its collecting dust at the moment. because i want to just get the outer tie rod ends and install all at once. You see how aged the old one is when side by side.
BTW their customer service is great . And the quality of it , just by looking at it seems very good too.
