Default metal hitting sound in brakes

after the car sits for a bit, i go out to drive and the first time i step on the brake pedal i get this really loud smack sound like metal hitting metal. the brakes seem to work fine, and it only happens when the brakes havent been used in a few hours, for example first drive of the morning. what is causing this?

my camry made this noise too in the same situation, never really figured out what was going on

mabye the caliper or pad gets kinda stuck and when i press on the brake it snaps together really suddenly and hits the rotor?

Is it a clank sound? If so, you've lost one of your anti-chatter clip/springs....the sound you hear IS the caliper hitting the rotor. Mine does it, I've just been to lazy to fix it.

It is easy enough to check- remove the wheel and with a flashlight, peer into the opening of the brake caliper and see if the pads have enough material to keep the backing away from the rotor. If the pads are fine, there is more to check, but at least you can get that (potentially disasterous) possibility out of the way.

yeah it's a V shaped spring that goes between the ends of the pads pushing them away from the rotor.

If those are missing, thats probibly the problem. A hardware kit is no more than $10 - $15.

If a car sits for a while the rotor begin to have surface rust and will cause a bad scrapping niose, now if it didn't go away within the next few miles of braking than it could be lack of lubrication (anti-seize), or you could be missing the anti-rattle clips or shims. One more this is one of your sliders could have locked up or you caliper piston, the only way to find out is take it all apart and make sure eveything is there and moving w/o any un-even pad ware.
