Default Extremely stiff brake pedal? Brake booster failure?

Hey guys,

Has anyone else experienced a brake pedal that takes a ton of effort to use? I have to almost stand on it to keep the car from moving at a dead stop. I'm thinking it's the brake booster or the vaccum line to the booster, but if anyone else has had this problem please speak up!!

Thanks

check for leaks. when my leak started it took a ton of pressure to hold the car. Once the pressure hit the breakpoint it went to the floor and my brakes went bye bye. Ended up driving home in first gear and using the ebrake to stop.

if not that i would definitely check the brake booster and all cylinders for an internal leak.

Usually that's the master cylinder. I have had a master cylinder go bad on two previous vehicles and it was always a hard hard peddle that indicated it.

Thanks guys...

Is there a way to diagnose the master cylinder to see if that's what the problem is?

Can't help you there. I don't know if there's a surefire way to say if its the master cylinder or the vacuum booster. I always just replaced it and it worked fine afterwards. I know that's not the best answer. Maybe someone else will know.

if it's the master cylinder, i guess you could check to see the color of your brake fluid. my mechanic tells me that if it turns black pretty quick, then the seals are giving and should be replaced. after i had mines done, i'm well over 1k miles and the fluid is still clear as before.
