Is there a way to get newrubber boots that go around the sliding pins?

Sure you can, part number is 47775-50010 and they should run about $2.50 each.

Thanks for that part number, actuary. I assume the boots are a press fit on the caliper mounting brackets, but that's one of those things I'll figure out once I get the new parts.

I do have a couple of questions about the caliper pins that these boots protect: how freely are they supposed to move? Are you supposed to remove them and lubricate them when you replace the pads?

One of my front caliper pins was frozen and caused the outside pad to wear down about 20,000 miles after I had the brakes done. The one pad was down to the metal while the other three had plenty of life left. I pulled all 4 front pins, the frozen one with some difficulty, cleaned them and the holes they go in, and coated them with bearing grease. Everything has been fine with the front brakes ever since.

Recently, my driver's side rear brake would make a creaking noise when applied. I pulled the calipers and pads and had plenty of life on the pads, but the pins wouldn't come out for love or money. I finally got them out, but if anyone knows a trick for doing that, please let me know. The two pins in the caliper were different. One had a plastic ring near the end farthest from the bolt head; the other was solid. The new pins I ordered for the front calipers have the plastic ring, and the part number, according to the local Lexus dealer, is the same for front and rear pins.

In short, am I supposed to lube the pins, and what is the trick to getting them out if they're stuck? As always, I appreciate any assistance.

I also had a bad experience with those pins. On one of my rear brakes, one of the pins was rusted in there and would not come out so I had to replace the whole bracket (I actually ended up snapping the old pin in half after trying to turn it with a big breaker bar... that's how bad it was stuck in there). There are indeed 2 different pins, one has a platic ring and the other doesn't (part numbers 47715-06020 and 47715-06030). I forgot which goes where, one is for the top the other for the bottom.

From my experience, the pins should slide in and out with a little bit of force. You should be able to pop them out to lube them. I am not sure about which type of lube you are supposed to use on there, I just put some white lithium grease. So I guess the trick to the pins is make sure they are always lubed and make sure the dust boots are on right so they keep out moisture and dirt.
