Loose Steering on 2002 GS300
Hello,
I bought a Certified Pre-Owned '02 GS300 about a week ago with 40K miles on it.
Today, after a few freeway rides, and some city driving,
the steering is feeling a little loose (it was tight till yesterday).
Any idea what could be wrong, or what should I do next?

Loose as in there's some "play" to it, before it becomes tight and you can feel it get tight and start steering the wheels. No shake, nothing to do with the speed.

With the engine off and key in (steering lock off), shimmy the wheel left-right about 1-2", is it loose with a lot of free play?
Also, Have a look under the dash and reach in to the steering shaft's knuckle and shake it left-right. If it moves about 1/2"-1" then you have the same problem as me..... There is a small plastic bearing inside the steering hub that the main shaft rotates on and mine is broken.
Another sure way of seeing if this is broken is to drive over very rough ground at 5-10mph, if the steering wheel shakes then yes it is broken. A very quick temporary cure is to push your foot onto the shaft where it goes through the floor-pan and see if the play is gone.

I just checked my column today because mine has allways had a little clatter at the wheel when i hit bumps in the road and when i turn the wheel back and forth and it appears this plastic piece your talking about is worn out. The column wiggles a bit down at the firewall. Are these replaceable:? It could possibly use bushings in the rack as well i haven't checked.
