I tried the Maguires bar, and I thought it was way too small. It just kept squishing between 3 fingers. The detail guy uses a bar that is just a little smaller than his hand. Anyway, I swear by them now, but I would much rather pay someone to do it.

Mine might have looked like this under a microscope, but they were barely visible to the naked eye if I focused just right under the right lighting. I never would have noticed them if he hadn't pointed them out.

i made the paint of a 1990 acura legend look almost new again using a clay bar, takes a lot of elbow grease but in the end its worth it to feel your paint ultra smooth like it was from the showroom on day 1

Full car clay bar should be done every 1-2 years, but for touching up spots you can do it whenever if the dirt is stubborn

Wash car, clay bar car, wash again, wax

I totally disagree. My paint wasn't nearly as smooth on day 1.

so did you get rid of it? its probably because cars in tx need to be shipped via railroad? here in so cal.. they get them from port and truck it to the dealers

Yep! It took my buddy well over an hour, but he got it all off. I'm sure every car would have some transportation debris in the paint. As said many times in this thread, it is a constant problem.

For those of you that pay for a good (including wash, clay bar, wash and wax/polish) detail service, what is it costing you?

My buddy charges $30 for a detailed wash and vacuum, $50 for the clay bar, and $90 for the sealer. However, he is very fast (not rushed), skilled (like a ninja), and meticulous; and it still takes 3 hours. This is also a mobile service, so part of that cost is for mileage and driving time.

im sure every car on the road would have some contamination in the paint..

but not every car has rail dust that starts to rust.. especially if it hasn't been rail transported.. you'd hear about it a lot more on autopia or something if it was a common problem with new cars

Yes, this is true. Its amazing how much grime is removed from a front windshield with a claybar! The clay removes embedded junk that would never come out with glass cleaner.

I too have the exact same problem on my White IS. I mostly get them on the roof, qtr panels, and heavily on the trunk and rear bumper. I too clayed/waxed/sealed my car and found the same spots within 2 weeks again. Im not sure where exactly they are comming from but are a PIA to get off.

I love the 3M claybar. If you know anyone at a bodyshop, ask them to get you one. It fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and works forever.

Goodluck fighting the rust spots! Its a never ending battle

maybe polishing/waxing will help prevent or decrease the amount of rust.

i thought the same thing but they still came back and in the same amount. The only thing waxing did was allow me to remove them a lot easier without having to scrub the car. I just had to run the clay bar over them and it picked them up easily.
