Is replacing ball joints and tie rods a do it yourself job?

when I had to remove the axle on my gs I had to rent a special socket from autozone, they no longer rent tools for free, instead you have to pay for them up front, then when you return the tools, they refund you your money. So basically you buy them then you just get a refund. Because i commmented on the fact that they used to just let you walk out with them, or pay a small deposit, rather than paying full price. He mentioned that I could actually just keep the socket, if I wanted, since I already paid for it.
