It is time to replace the shocks. What would be a good choice for a 1998 SC400? Looking at the Tokico Blue or KYB GR2, which one is better?

Also, do I need an alignment after the shock repacement?

I would say KYB if you want a more comfortable ride.

Alignment isn't necessary unless there is already a problem.

Anytime you replace your shocks, you should get your car realigned.

Please explain why. If there are no existing alignment issues, new shocks will not change the alignment. Sure, it can never hurt to have the car re-aligned, but a blanket statement of saying to do it seems overboard.

KYB all the way. The tokico are good but a bit too rough.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I will go with the KYB as I want to keep the car as close to stock as possible. One more question. What is the quality of the KYB compare to Tokico? By this I mean reliability.

You can get KYB GR2s for pretty cheap like $230 shipped which is a good bang for the buck.

correct... changing shocks on our vehicles does not require an alignment whatsoever...

so long as you aren't converting to supra shocks, or a lowering spring at the same time, there is absolutely no need for an alignment

put some Bilstein shocks and oem-sized supra TT springs on there. Your car will have better high speed stability .

I have had Tokico Blues on my 240 for the last 2 years and the ride is excellent even with an eibach prokit. KYB GR2s are nice but they don't like anything other then oem ride height springs or they will be blown in a year.
