Strange thud over large bumps...
Hey guys,
Question for you all...
Most of the time my SC300 rides great, however, over a large / sharp bump...say a good sized pot hole...I get this strange "thud" sound from the rear.
It almost sounds like the car is bottoming out, but I'm sure reality is something different.
Mainly from the passenger rear, but has come from both sides of the rear. Over average bumps, etc - nothing out of the ordinary.
Are there some bushings or something else to examine? Any ideas
Car Details:
1992 SC300 / 5spd
150k miles
17" wheels / tires
Eibach springs for the SC (small drop)
KYB struts all around

How old and how long have the struts been on there? I have heard storys of shock towers loosening up over time. It happened on my boys RSX. But a simple test to see if the shock is blown is to bounce each corner and to see if it rebounds well. If that's not it, could be another bad suspension component. Get the car on a lift and check everything. I do know how you feel though. I'm goin through the same thing. 140K on the clock.

Hmm...well, the struts are brand new. I just had them installed ~3wks ago by a NJ shop familar with SC's and Supras.
The problem was there before I had the install done, but now, it seems more exaggerated with the new springs and struts.

look at rear bushings. sounds like that tend to be from the upper control arm or the traction bars. if its not that then check to see if the bolts are seized in the sleeves of those bushings. I had the noises in both front and rear and it ended up being a combo of bad bushings with the bolts seized in the sleeves. hope that helps.

Another thing you can check with the car on a lift is rear sway bushings-- They will make a tremendous amt. of noise when worn enough to let the swaybar jump around inside the bushing-- Check and replace as needed-- and remember to grease them-
These guys have gone over and beyond helping me get my SC400 back and running-- I had the noises in the front end-- bad ones-- it needed lca bushings.
These Guys can help-- I personally recommend their products and service, as they're both top notch.
